Warning: SPOILERS for The Umbrella Academy season 2.

Allison from The Umbrella Academy has stopped using her powers twice now, and might even give up using them again after the events of season 2. Although she’s one of the most powerful members of the Umbrella Academy, Allison rarely uses her rumor abilities, and, when she does, the consequences can be drastic. Influencing people with speech is incredible but can also be extremely dangerous and traumatic for those affected by it. Once she realized the effects of rumoring people, Allison decided using her powers were not worth the risk.

Allison had already sworn off using her abilities at the start of The Umbrella Academy season 1. In the past, she had only rumored people either on her father’s orders or because of selfish reasons. Although she used her powers to fight crime, she also forced Vanya to forget her powers and controlled her daughter’s moods and behavior. The latter instance was the reason why her marriage fell apart. After that, Allison realized she was abusing her powers and not considering how they could hurt people emotionally. So, she stopped rumoring altogether until she was forced to do it to stop Vanya.

After Vanya realizes she has powers, Allison reveals she made Vanya think she was ordinary on their father’s orders. The conversation ends up in a fight, and as Vanya becomes more aggressive, Allison tries to use her power against her sister. Vanya takes her violin bow and cuts Allison’s throat to stop her from speaking. Fortunately, Allison survives the attack but is left without a voice for the rest of the episodes and the start of season 2. Once again, Allison’s powers had dire consequences, not only making Vanya distrust Allison but having a lasting negative impact on Vanya’s adult life.

Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison on season 2 of The Umbrella Academy

In The Umbrella Academy season 2, due to Five’s inconsistent time-traveling skills, Allison becomes stuck in the 60s without a voice. She spends two-and-a-half years on her own, slowly healing. But even after her voice comes back, it seems she never uses her abilities. Despite that or perhaps because of it, she builds a good life and marries a man she loves. However, once her siblings reappear, trouble eventually follows too. Allison begins to rumor people again and, by doing so, reveals her powers can also have consequences on her. When she demonstrates her abilities to her husband, it becomes clear she has trouble knowing when to stop. She goes overboard with the diner owner, forcing him to burn himself with coffee long after it’s necessary to make her point.

Allison has a complicated relationship with her rumor powers, acting almost like an addict who can’t control herself and is unable to think about the long term consequences of her actions. This is why she doesn’t trust herself and has stopped using her powers twice. Now that, at the end of The Umbrella Academy season 2, she has experienced what it's like to be a victim of her own abilities thanks to Lila, she might even swear off using them again in season 3.
