The Marvel Cinematic Universe has left a bunch of questions that fans have tried to answer, and through the animated series What If…? some answers have arrived, among those what would have happened if Ultron got his Vision body, as he originally planned. With the Infinity Saga now over, the MCU is moving forward with its highly-anticipated Phase 4, which covers both movies and TV shows. After three live-action TV series, the MCU brought something very different with the animated series What If…? before jumping back to the current timeline and issues of this connected universe.

What If…? is an animated anthology series that explores what would have happened in the MCU had some key moments from the main timeline (that were covered in the Infinity Saga and beyond) happened differently. What If…? has explored timelines like one where Peggy Carter becomes Captain Carter, one where a quantum virus makes way for a zombie invasion, another where Doctor Strange turns evil, and another where Killmonger saves Tony Stark from the Ten Rings in Afghanistan. After a couple of dark episodes, What If…? took a break with a more lighthearted story in episode 7, which was all about Thor’s life if he was an only child – but this story came with a twist at the end.

What If…? episode 7 saw Thor throwing a huge party on Earth with guests from all over the galaxy, but in this timeline, as he and Loki are not siblings and the God of Mischief was raised as a Frost Giant, they are not rivals. This in turn means that Loki never invaded Earth and the Avengers team doesn’t exist, so Thor is free of any superhero duties. However, right at the end of the episode, an army of drones led by none other than Ultron arrives, but what makes this twist even more shocking (and also more confusing) is that Ultron has all the Infinity Stones and he’s using Vision’s body instead of the robotic one he used in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Ultron Vision in What If

Ultron (James Spader) was an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner as part of a peacekeeping program, which originated after the Chitauri invasion in the first Avengers movie, and all they needed to get it going was the Mind Stone, as it had a net of neurons that could help them finish the Ultron Program. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, and the Ultron AI quickly became sentient and began to question its existence, and came to the conclusion that humanity is the greatest threat to peace, and chose genocide as the solution. An important part of his plans was the creation of a synthetic body made of vibranium that he could use, but the uploading of his consciousness into this body was sabotaged. This body was later used by the Avengers and became the hero Vision, with the J.A.R.V.I.S. AI, Ultron’s vibranium body, and the Mind Stone on his forehead.

What If…? briefly showed what would have happened if Ultron had gotten his Vision body, which would have obviously been disastrous as he would have been technically indestructible and too powerful, so much that he got all the Infinity Stones. However, this twist doesn’t make sense as part of “Party Thor”’s timeline, as Ultron was a result of the Chitauri invasion and a creation of the Avengers, and none of these happen in this timeline. Still, Marvel has finally answered what would have happened with Ultron if he had successfully taken over his Vision body, though this also left a bunch of new questions.
