Two and a Half Men was the story of two brothers, Charlie and Alan, living in Charlie's Malibu beach house. Then Charlie's actor, Charlie Sheen left the show and was replaced by Ashton Kutcher's character Walden Schmidt. Now the show was about Alan and some random guy who he had never met before living together in Walden's beach house.

But despite the upset caused by Sheen's departure, Kutcher was able to bring his own personality and humor to the character of Walden. The rich, good looking Walden Schmidt was still a lost boy in some ways and needed the influence of Alan to mature into a confident adult. But Walden's personal journey did not always make sense, leaving us with these 10 questions.

Walden's Depression

When Walden was first introduced, he was in a pretty bad way. He had just gotten a divorce from his wife and was so broken up that he tried to commit suicide by drowning himself in the sea. That was how he met Alan and told him of his heartache. In case you thought the suicide attempt was an impulsive, one-off thing, Walden also later drove so fast and carelessly in his car with Alan next to him that Alan was sure they were going to die.

Such reckless behavior indicates Walden was deeply disturbed in his head, to the point of repeatedly trying to end his life. And yet, this clearly deep-seated state of depression was never referred to again, nor was Walden shown getting any kind of professional help to deal with his mental state.

Personality Changes

As the seasons progressed, Walden went from being an intelligent but naive tech tycoon to a practical and mature adult. But then he seemed to progress even further into becoming a petty, snippy roommate for Alan who was constantly making belittling remarks and scolding those around him for various reasons.

Much of this character evolution seemed to have nothing to do with who Walden was established as being early on and simply seemed to be an attempt to replicate the kind of sniping that Alan and Charlie used to frequently indulge in, which had been a major source of comedy on the show.

High Schol Sweethearts

At one point, Walden mentions that he and his now ex-wife had been high school sweethearts. However, at another point in the show, he revealed that Walden had been such a smart student and that he had skipped high school and gone directly to MIT.

So when exactly had he met his wife? Had she been in high school while he was at MIT? That doesn't sound like the type of relationship which would result in the deep love Walden harbors for his ex-wife.

Why Keep Alan Around?

Early on, it is indicated that Walden allowed Alan to stay on at the beach house because Walden was unable to function on his own, and needed the steadying influence of Alan. In later seasons, however, Alan and Walden fight constantly and Walden frequently calls out Alan for leeching off him.

Clearly Walden no longer enjoys living with Alan and is actually hampered from settling down with his girlfriend because of Alan's presence. So why is Alan still allowed to stay on with Walden, when the two have only known each other for some months?

Zoey Leaving Walden

Zoey was the next great big love of Walden's life after his ex-wife. And then the two broke up because of... reasons. The truth is, there was no good reason given for Zoey and Walden breaking up other than because not doing so would fundamentally change the nature of the show.

Instead of marrying Walden off, the makers decided to have Zoey break up with him and get back together with her ex, despite her admitting to loving Walden and him being clearly the better choice out of the two men.

The Surrogacy Option

A big part of Walden's personal arc was his maturing enough to want to start a family, even if he could not find a woman and had to settle for marrying Alan in order to be eligible for adopting a child. But why did Walden never consider just using a female surrogate to birth a child with his own DNA?

The surrogacy option is impractical for many couples because of the expensive price tag attached to the procedure, but Walden with his immense wealth would have no problem with that. It would certainly be easier than pretending to be gay and marrying Alan and all the other hoops the government made him jump through in order to adopt a child.

Where Was Charlie In The End?

In the final episode, Charlie returns from a life of captivity to exact revenge on Alan and Walden. He starts by somehow breaking into the beach house and planting cardboard cutouts of Alan and Walden with nooses around their necks. Clearly, Charlie was fully committed to his plan of physically hurting and possibly killing his brother and the new owner of his beach house.

So why did Charlie not just stay inside the house and wait for them to come inside? Why did he simply leave, and then make one more trip to the house in the final few seconds of the series finale?

Who Is Mila Kunis?

Ashton Kutcher is as famous for dating and marrying Mila Kunis as he is for his professional career. Thus, it was no surprise when Kunis guest-starred on the show as Vivian, a hiker that Walden instantly becomes enamored with. The relationship did not last long.

But what made the episode particularly interesting is that previously, Alan had made a passing reference to the actress Mila Kunis in an episode. So are Vivian and Mila Kunis separate entities in the world of Two and a Half Men?

Where Is The Rest Of The Staff?

Walden is constantly stated to be vastly wealthy. Unlike Charlie, who made easy money by writing a few hit jingles on his piano, Walden has worked hard to create a tech company worth billions.

And yet, despite being the head of a successful MNC, we never get to see Walden hiring anyone beyond Berta the housekeeper, who basically came with the house. You would think a billionaire would need to have a bigger staff to manage his many assets.

When Does Walden Work?

Walden's work life is rarely shown in any meaningful manner. Sure, sometimes he works on a new app idea with other professionals. And sometimes he hires Jake to work at his company. But mostly, Walden seems to have just as much free time on his hands as Alan and Jake.

While heads of companies divest a lot of their responsibilities to underlings, there is still a great deal more to running a company than making a few calls, sitting in front of your laptop at home and attending a couple of board meetings.
