The legacy version of Twitter that is used in certain browsers will be shutting down next month, meaning some players will no longer be able to use Twitter on their Nintendo 3DS handhelds or other supported consoles. This affects a very small minority of handheld gamers who use Twitter through their console's browser, which will make it much more difficult to share their favorite handheld gaming moments.

Legacy Twitter (also known as "Old Twitter")  is the version that runs on generic web browsers. Over the course of 2020, Twitter has been discontinuing Legacy version of the social media giant on various platforms, informing users that they will need to switch to a different web browser or device supporting modern Twitter. This will not affect PC users who use popular web browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox, but it will affect those who use devices that have their own built-in web browsers.

The 3DS is one of the handheld consoles that comes with its own web browser. Twitter user DaRealAgent3 posted a photo of their 3DS' using Twitter via its built-in web browser which displayed a message stating that the Legacy version of Twitter would be shutting down on December 15, 2020. Users replying to the tweet reported that their handheld consoles also displayed a similar message. Some claimed that this is also going to affect the Nintendo Switch's secret web browser as well as the web browser on the PS Vita. Some other consoles, such as the PlayStation 4, remain completely untouched, allowing players to continue tweeting from their consoles' browser.

It is important to note that this is not the fault of Nintendo, but is instead Twitter's decision to discontinue its Legacy version of the platform. Luckily, this won't also affect the integrated Twitter upload feature on consoles like the Nintendo Switch. While Screen Rant does not have a complete list of consoles that will be affected by the Legacy Twitter shutdown on December 15, users can visit the Twitter Help Center for a full list of supported browsers.

Obviously, this isn't a widespread issue that is going to affect millions of users, and it's fascinating that it was discovered at all given the lack of users who use their 3DS to tweet regularly. This is a very niche issue that will affect a handful of Twitter users, and therefore ultimately might not be so bad. For 3DS Twitter users losing their primary avenue for tweets and hot takes, though, it might be time to upgrade to a smartphone or invest in a laptop.
