Twitter is one of the best places to follow the football World Cup online, but the barrage of push notifications from the app can be annoying. World Cup fans take to Twitter to share memes, jokes, and live tweets, while staying updated on the day's matches. However, Twitter has been spamming users with irrelevant World Cup notifications that can be especially annoying for people who do not follow the game. Even for those who do, the notifications may not always add value.

The World Cup in Qatar is well underway, with the first round of matches done and dusted. What started with 32 teams from around the world will soon be down to just 16, with the final scheduled to be played on Dec. 18. The tournament generated its fair share of controversies for a variety of reasons, including the choice of host nation – Qatar – that is notorious for its flagrant human rights violations.

The new setting will be auto-saved and Twitter will no longer send push notifications related to the World Cup. By using this method, Twitter users will continue to get their important alerts on time without being bombarded with World Cup tidbits. Users can also go through other notification options in the same settings menu and disable anything that is irrelevant.

For those who don't want to view any World Cup content inside the Twitter app, there's also the option to mute particular words from the feed. For example, users can mute 'World Cup' to stop seeing any tweets that contain those words. To mute a word or phrase, open Twitter settings, tap 'Privacy and safety' and then select 'Mute and block.' Tap 'Muted words,' tap 'Add,' and then type the words that need to be muted. And that's it! Go ahead and stop all Twitter World Cup notifications and mute related tweets to enjoy the games in peace. Twitter remains a great social media platform despite the current chaos, and turning off unnecessary noise can vastly improve the experience.
