[Update 10:07 AM ET: A little over an hour after Twitter's outage was first reported, the site and app appear to be working again.]

Twitter, the go-to app for political discourse and daily dog photos, is down right now.  Since its launch in 2006, Twitter has quickly become one of the most recognizable destinations on the internet. It's now a home for people to share quick status updates, watch popular live streams, host audio chat rooms, and even tip their favorite online creators.

As with any website, however, things aren't always perfect. Data is sometimes compromised, certain features get broken, and occasionally the entire site goes down completely. Even if a site/app works 99-percent of the time without any fault, the 1-percent where things go haywire is never fun.

As of August 27, 2021, Twitter appears to be down for users in the United States, Canada, and potentially other parts of the world. DownDetector currently shows that "user reports indicate problems at Twitter," featuring well over 12,000 outage reports beginning at 9:02 AM ET. Per the DownDetector website, 51-percent of users are having issues with the Twitter website, 33-percent can't use the iPhone/iPad app, and another 15-percent are reporting issues with the Android app. After talking with other members of the Screen Rant Tech team, however, it seems Twitter is basically down for all of those platforms for the time being.

There's No ETA When Twitter Will Start Working Again

Twitter Freeing Usernames December 11

As is often the case with these situations, there's no estimated time for when Twitter will start working again. One can hope the site is back online sooner rather than later, but the reality is that there's no way of knowing for sure. It could be down for a couple more minutes, another hour, or potentially longer.

While this is undoubtedly annoying, Twitter is far from the only major website to go down this year. Back in May, Reddit's desktop site and mobile apps were temporarily down thanks to technical difficulties. Some iCloud services were down that same month, with users unable to access Find My, iCloud account pages, Contacts, and more.

This article will be updated once Twitter starts going back to normal. If there's no update showing Twitter is back online, that means it's still probably down. Sit tight, keep an eye out for updates, and we'll all be back to Tweeting before you know it.
