A Twitch streamer’s subathon almost ended in disaster as her kitchen was nearly set aflame by a grease fire during a live cooking stream, though her chat was less than kind in their response to her efforts to put out the fire. This is far from the first time a dangerous incident has been caught on camera, with other streamers not only accidentally starting fires, but even content creators being robbed on Twitch.

Twitch is a livestreaming platform that became tremendously popular for its live game streaming services. While gaming certainly makes up its majority content, Twitch still serves as the leading platform for creative content sharing on a variety of subjects. Such examples include live broadcasts, teaching tools, and charity events. Twitch also encourages streamers to engage with their viewers in unique ways. Subathons, for example, are a popular trend where a streamer will set a timer and stream themselves doing a variety of activities. The catch is, their stream timer increases for each sub they receive during their stream. Notable subathon's include Ludwig's month-long stream in 2021, which saw millions of dollars raised for charity.

A recent subathon from Twitch streamer kjanecaron ended in disaster when, while cooking for her viewers, an overheated pan began filling her kitchen with smoke. Shared to Twitter by Dexerto, a clip of the incident shows a grease fire erupting from the pan as smoke alarms blare in the background. kjanecaron panics and rushes the pan to a nearby sink to douse the flames with water. Unfortunately, this is a common and dangerous mistake, as water only intensifies a grease fire. The resulting emission of flame nearly spreads to her countertop. Distressed, she places the fiery pan back on the stovetop and pleads with the chat for help with the situation. She then leaves the camera view and presumably starts yelling for outside help as the flames in the pan, mercifully, began to die down on their own.

The unfortunate Twitch livestream caused no serious harm to kjanecaron, though it was easy for viewers to poke fun at the situation afterward. While there was some sympathy from the chat, most were quick to admonish kjanecaron for her attempts to extinguish a grease fire with water rather than smothering the flames. Since water doesn’t mix with oil, it slides beneath the oil and directly onto the heated pan. It immediately evaporates with the steam trapped beneath the oil until it bursts from the flaming oil, spreading the fire. Sadly, this is a common mistake people make, especially when panicked.

Thanks to the live nature of Twitch as a platform, it's fairly common for streams to go wrong in some way or another. While the majority of on-screen accidents aren't likely to harm a streamer, with a regular example being unintended wardrobe malfunctions, situations like kjanecaron's can quickly take a turn, and an innocent livestream can end in disaster if proper precautions aren't taken.

Thankfully, kjanecaron escaped with only minor burns on her hands and there was no severe damage to her domicile. Despite ridicule from some Twitch viewers, she still encourages people to watch the clip for entertainment and a lesson in fire safety. Hopefully, other Twitch streamers can avert similar potential disasters from this experience.
