Actor Danny DeVito has assured fans of the 1988 film Twins that the script for Twins 2 is still in development. The Ivan Reitman fish-out-of-water comedy gained immediate attention for its intentional mismatching of DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger as long lost fraternal twins Vincent and Julius.

Twins ended up being the fifth highest-grossing film of 1988 – no small feat considering that some of the competition for that year included the likes of Die Hard, Big, and Coming to America. It also marked the first time that Schwarzenegger had played the lead in a comedy, something that few could have envisioned him doing, as he was firmly entrenched in the action genre at the time. Yet somehow, the on-screen chemistry between DeVito and Schwarzenegger managed to work. Audiences were delighted with naïve and well-bred Vincent’s search for his thieving con artist brother, Julius. Though the film still works today, its dated and cliched aspects are arguably part of its aging charm and offer enough fun to suggest that Twins 2 could always find success at the modern box office.

Thankfully for fans of the original film, the sequel is still in development, though it remains at the scripting stage. DeVito recently spoke with CinemaBlend and assured fans that Twins 2 would happen but that the script is still being worked on. Unfortunately, some fans might have their confidence shaken by DeVito adding that “hopefully” the film would get made. It seems the 76-year-old is confident that it will happen, but not 100 percent certain:

Yes. Yeah, we’re working on it. It’s been a while I know, but we’re developing the screenplay right now. That’s going to happen… hopefully.

Schwarzenegger and De Vito in Twins

The “while” that DeVito refers to concerning development on Twins 2 is indeed an understatement. News of the sequel first kicked off back in 2012, and since then, very little has occurred to encourage fans that Twins 2 will be arriving any time soon. In fact, in 2017, Schwarzenegger announced the script for the film – tentatively titled Triplets - was finished and that Eddie Murphy was in negotiations to play the third long-long sibling. At present, there is no confirmation that Murphy is ready to tackle the project, though this could be due to his focus currently being directed at the upcoming Coming 2 America.

No one likes to see a film languish in development hell, particularly when it’s a sequel to a top-rated comedy. However, it is worth noting that the producers behind Twins 2 would do well to watch how Coming 2 America fares. As one of the top ten highest-grossing films of the 80s (and particularly one that out-grossed Twins), if Coming 2 America can’t drum up sufficient interest over 30 years after its initial release, then it’s hard to imagine a Twins sequel faring much better.
