Twin Peaks: The Return seemed to imply the death of Amanda Seyfried's Becky, but what actually happened to the character? The announcement of Twin Peaks: The Return came as something of a pleasant shock to longtime fans, especially the news that co-creator David Lynch would helm every episode. The original series of Twin Peaks was something of a cultural event and had a major impact on future TV shows likes The X-Files.

Despite its initial success, the overwhelming audience and network demand that Lynch and co-creator Mark Frost bring resolution to the Laura Palmer Twin Peaks murder mystery early in season 2 ultimately hurt the series. Without this primary story engine and Lynch stepping back from the show in the aftermath, much of season 2 was filled with goofy or tedious subplots, and after ratings and reviews dipped, it was put on hiatus before being cancelled on a cliffhanger. Lynch also met backlash over the 1992 prequel Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, which covered the final week of Laura's life. The movie was much darker than the show, and was a box-office disappointment.

In an interview with Empire Magazine in the early 2000s, David Lynch was very much not interested in a revival, declaring the show "Dead as a doornail." Thankfully, he had a major change of heart around a decade later while working on bonus features for the series, and Twin Peaks: The Return finally arrived in 2017. In addition to bringing back much of the original cast, lots of new actors joined the ensemble, including Amanda Seyfried as Becky Burnett.

Becky is the daughter of Twin Peaks' former bad boy turned deputy Bobby Briggs (Dana Ashbrook) and Shelly (Mädchen Amick) and she worked in a local bakery. Becky is married to Steven Burnett, an unemployed drug addict who was also having an affair with Gersten Hayward (Alicia Witt). Becky and Steven's marriage is shown to be highly volatile and destructive, with Becky becoming so enraged when she learns of his affair that she fires a gun into Gersten's apartment door, though neither Steven or Gersten are inside.

Amanda Seyfried's Becky is last seen in Twin Peaks: The Return's "Part 13," when she calls Shelly worried about Steven's disappearance. Steven himself is last shown in "Part 15," where he's sitting against a tree in the woods with Gersten. He's out of his mind on drugs and holding a handgun, and is distressed over something to do with Becky, cryptically stating "She did it" and "I did it." This could imply he shot or killed Becky, as she's never seen again on the show. That said, it could also just be his paranoid mind making him think he did something terrible.

Twin Peaks: The Return's "Part 15" also strongly indicated Steven then shot himself, and the Burnett storyline isn't touched upon for the remainder of the series. Becky is mentioned in Mark Frost's spinoff book Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier, which is set after the events of Twin Peaks: The Return. The book mentions Steven is still missing, but that Becky is free of legal issues. Fans may take this with a grain of salt, as some feel Lynch and Frost's readings on Twin Peaks are quite different. It feels like the death of Becky would have been a bigger story, but given how abruptly some characters disappeared from the revival, this could have been by design. Becky probably is fine, but like most of David Lynch's work, its up to viewers to decide for themselves.
