From the first moments of the pilot until the closing scene of its third season, Twin Peaks is constantly shrouded in mystery. While not a definitive ending, the 2017 revival further explores fans' favorite characters and lets them know what they have been up to for the past twenty-five years.

However, plenty of characters' fates are still left up in the air. Fans are praying and hoping for a fourth season sometime in the near the future. Until that day comes, the following residence and mysterious people of the show have giant question marks hanging above their heads. While some of these characters are referenced in related literary material, those who only watch the show will know none of those details.

Josie Packard

Josie Packard's story comes to a head in the second season. This being Twin Peaks, it wasn't good enough to have her die of shock and fright after killing Thomas Eckhardt. The ending of the episode shows her stuck inside a wooden doorknob, implying her spirit is floating somewhere inside the Great Northern Hotel. Unfortunately, the third season barely mentions the character in the modern day.

Leo Johnson

It is difficult to feel bad for Leo Johnson in the second season. He is a barely functioning human being tormented and abused by Windom Earl, but fans do not forget how he inflicted similar punishment on Shelly Johnson and how his actions contributed to Laura Palmer's death. Windom Earl leaves Leo with a spider hanging over him in a cage, only held up by a piece of string in Leo's mouth. Did he grow tired of holding the cage up, or is he still there after more than two decades?

Chester Desmond

Chester Desmond Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me

Played by Chris Isaak, Chester Desmond briefly investigates the murder of Teresa Banks before mysteriously disappearing in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Dale Cooper investigates, but the trail quickly turns cold. More than twenty-five years later and fans are still in the dark as to what became of him. One assumes he was taken to the Black Lodge, but it would be nice to know for sure. It would also be sweet to see Chris Isaak return to the role.

Donna Hayward

Donna Hayward dramatically leaves the town after discovering Ben Horne was potentially her father. The character is completely absent from the third season. The Hayward family in general has little significance in the revival, save for a cameo by Will Hayward via a Skype call. If she were to return in a future story, they'd have two actresses to choose from, since she was recast for Fire Walk With Me.

Catherine Martell

At the end of season two, Catherine Martell loses her husband in a surprising and dramatic bank explosion. Curiously, audiences never see her reaction to this tragedy, nor do they have any idea what she does before season three.

Perhaps the character already passed away, or she is off doing something else. Piper Laurie is still alive, so it is a shame they did not bring her back.

Hank Jennings

Hank Jennings lives a double life throughout the whole series. While the town and Norma Jennings are led to believe his initial imprisonment is the result of an accident, he is really a cold-blooded killer and gun for hire. Fortunately, the end of the original run sees Norma leaving Hank to rot in jail while she strikes out on her own. Is Hank still in prison or did her eventually get released?

Eileen Hayward

While her husband, Will Hayward, has at least one scene in the third seasons, Eileen Hayward does receives no mention in the new season, leaving fans to wonder what happened to her.

The role was minor until the end of the second season when a previously hidden past between her and Ben Horne came to light. Did she ever reconcile with Donna, and did her marriage survive this revelation coming to light?

Annie Blackburn

Of all the characters who suffered terrible fates and trauma during the show, Annie Blackburn was perhaps the least deserving. A recent dropout from a convent, the only thing Annie did to earn herself the attention of Windom Earl and the Black Lodge was fall in love with Dale Cooper. After her kidnapping, she ends up in the hospital in a comatose state. Does she ever wake up, and does she still long for Cooper?

Laura Palmer

Laura Palmer Fire Walk With Me

While the show starts with the discovery of her lifeless body, in the world of Twin Peaks death is rarely the final stop on the road. The last episodes of the third season see Dale Cooper head back to 1989 and potentially save her from death. Things get weirder when he meets a woman who looks exactly like Laura, but goes by a different name and has no knowledge of the titular town.

Dale Cooper

Leave it up to Twin Peaks to return after twenty-five years only to leave fans with more questions than answers. The third season concludes with Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MaClachlan, potentially ending up in a different reality where he is apparently known as Richard. The season ends with him wondering what year it is as the woman who appears to be Laura Palmer screams in fright and the screen fades to black.
