If you were a tween in the 2000s, when the Twilight saga gained popularity, you may not have realized a couple of things. This is especially true since Jacob (Taylor Lautner) was in love with Bella and she couldn't deny her feelings for him. Edward had it rough throughout the five films. Looking back at the film saga, let's take into account the moments when Edward was the most vulnerable and was hurting in his relationship.

Edward's Guilt Over James

Taking the first film into account, one may begin to realize just how horrible Edward feels for starting a relationship with Bella. He's waited over 100 years to find someone to love, while his family already had life-long partners. As much as the dynamic of a vampire falling in love with a human makes for some intrigue, it comes with some hardships.

Edward had extreme guilt when James (Cam Gigandet) became fascinated by Bella when all he wanted to do was have a fun day with his family. This only worsened when she was hurt and Edward was forced to suck out the venom from her bloodstream.

Bella's Insistence To Become Immortal

Edward

By the end of the first film, Bella made it clear that she wanted to become an immortal vampire, like Edward. This becomes the main issue of conflict for the couple. It also hurts Edward the most when analyzed. Fans are aware that Edward has his internal battles with being a vampire and misses his humanity the most.

As much as it hurts him to restrain himself with Bella, he values her being human. The fact that Bella constantly battles him throughout the saga over this makes you feel bad for him. She can't seem to fully grasp Edward's reasoning of enjoying a human life.

Bella Didn't Want To Tell Jacob They Were Getting Married

Edward is old fashioned, due to the time period in which he was born. The only way he was willing to turn Bella was if she married him. This is a huge step in anyone's relationship, especially for Bella and Edward. It's safe to say that Edward was over the moon when she said yes.

Sadly, his moment of happiness was short-lived when Bella refused to tell Jacob. You can't help but frown when she told him she would wait to break the news. In a way, Bella refused to make Jacob see the reality of her relationship with Edward. Instead, she hid the joyous occasion to save his feelings.

Edward Breaks Up With Bella

As much as New Moon showcased Bella's depressive state after Edward left, you have to take into account his feelings, as well. Looking back at every event that forced him to make his decision, you feel bad for him.

Not only was Bella in great danger in the first film, but she was also close to being killed by Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) in the second. It showed Bella's fragility in his world. Despite his love for her, he had to try and save her - even if meant hurting her in the beginning.

Honeymoon Bruises

Audiences knew that Edward wanted to wait until marriage to have any form of a sexual relationship with Bella. He was also hesitant because of the possibility of hurting her. Jacob said the same at their wedding, explaining that conjugal relations could possibly kill her.

Edward always took precaution and when they finally consummated their relationship, he was filled with guilt. You can't help but feel pity towards him when he sees the bruises he left behind on Bella. His fear came true. Even if Bella tried to persuade him that she was alright, he couldn't fathom hurting her again.

Couldn't Keep Bella Warm

Many would agree that a fun perk of being in a relationship is cuddling up to your significant other and basking in their warmth. You feel for Edward when he can't do this simple thing for Bella. In Eclipse, it becomes more prominent when she is almost freezing to death before the newborn battle.

It made fans heartache for him when he was forced to allow Jacob to hold her close and provide her with warmth. It's another example of guilt that Edward has in his relationship with Bella. Being near her would only make it worse, due to his cold skin.

Bella's Pregnancy

Bella's pregnancy hit Edward hard and it showed. Not only was Edward worried when it was confirmed, but it only escalated as they witnessed the effect it had on her body. It was a rough patch in their relationship, as Edward felt guilt over being responsible, even if it was their child.

It only worsened when the baby cracked Bella's ribs and malnourished her. He saw the possibility of losing the love of his life. Fans felt his pain when he saw Bella look at her frail body in the bathroom.

When Bella Almost Died

When Edward was tricked into believing Bella died, you felt his pain. Bella was his world and the idea of her being gone destroyed him, enough that he was willing to die by the Volturi. In Eclipse, he admitted to Jacob that the pain he felt was unfathomable and he wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Bella dying after giving birth was a stake to the heart for audiences who felt Edward's sorrow. He waited for decades to find his soulmate. This was also magnified when she wasn't immediately responding to his venom. On top of that, he knew what her possible death meant for his newborn child. Tissue anyone?

When Jacob Gave An Ultimatum

Some would agree that Jacob was a bit selfish in his pursuit of Bella's love. The pinnacle moment was before the newborn battle in Eclipse when Jacob kept Bella warm. Jacob forces Edward to admit the truth - Bella has unrequited feelings for Jacob.

This only worsens when Edward admitted that even if Bella chose Jacob, he would let it be to keep her happy. Edward even sorrowfully admitted that Jacob would have been a better choice and her chance at a long human life.

Jacob Kisses Bella

After the heart to heart in the tent, fans could only imagine Edward's pain when Bella asked Jacob to kiss her. This also came after Jacob overheard them talking about marriage. It was a hurtful moment for Edward, as he had no choice but to witness the truth Jacob told him prior.

It's hard to see the love of your life willingly ask to be kissed by someone she also loves. All in all, Edward had it pretty rough in his relationship with Bella between her human life, Jacob, and any danger she came to face.
