With the huge success of The Twilight Saga, and only two movies left to go (Breaking Dawn parts 1 & 2), is it really a surprise that Summit Entertainment is already looking ahead to see how far it can carry on the franchise?
Now consider this as strictly RUMOR at this point because it comes from a first-time tipster but a source (who works in licensing) over at What's Playing is reporting that Summit is looking to turn the Twilight spin-off novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner into a movie.
Our own Rob Keyes (correctly) speculated that the release of the Bree Tanner book back in March would lead to a possible movie adaptation, which would act as a spin-off to the Twilight movie franchise, just as the novella is a spin-off/companion to the book series.
Fans of Twilight will know the character of Tanner from the book and she appeared briefly in this year's Eclipse movie where she was played by Jodelle Ferland (Silent Hill). "It goes without saying Summit want to continue this franchise… Tanner is the one they’re looking at post-Breaking Dawn," said the source, although supposedly the studio would most likely switch actresses from Ferland for the spin-off (why exactly?).
When pressed for any possible names for the new Tanner that were being thrown around, a couple were noted by the source: Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass, Let Me In) and Ellen Fanning (little sister of Dakota, who also stars in a couple of the Twilight movies). Those aren't exactly definitive choices but more like "wish-list" type thinking. It would have to be at this point as, after all, we've still got both parts of Breaking Dawn to come before we get to the point of Twilight spin-offs hitting the big-screen.
However, with the amount of cash The Twilight Saga has snagged so far with just three movies (over $1.7 billion worldwide and that's not including the books), you can bet on the fact that there will be more Twilight to come post-Breaking Dawn. Whether it'll be a Bree Tanner-focused spin-off remains to be seen, but if this rumor is anything to go by then discussions are already underway.
Again, take this latest Twilight info as RUMOR until we either something official that proves it true or false. It could go either way as on the one hand I can definitely believe that Summit wants to make spin-off movies, but at the same time rumors are abound when it comes to this particular vampire franchise.
One of the problems Summit has had and still faces today is the fact that they've run out of books. Make no mistake, the studio wants to milk the Twilight franchise for all its worth but all they have to go on is one spin-off book that focuses on a supporting character. After that what will the studio do next? Perhaps author Stephanie Meyer will write more spin-off books and Summit can go from there.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves - for now let's just concentrate on Breaking Dawn and this one (possible) spin-off movie, shall we?
Stay tuned to Screen Rant to see if this rumor is true or not.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn will be released in two parts, with Part 1 hitting theaters on November 18th, 2011 and Part 2 following almost a year later on November 16th, 2012.
