The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Gets IMAX Release

A lot of things are done in Hollywood purely for the sake of trying to squeeze out an extra penny - and yet, even knowing that, sometimes there are decisions made in tinsel  town that make even the most cynical of us (that'd be me) want to twist our faces up in disgust.

The latest case of "Are you kidding me?" comes with the news that next summer's Tweener blockbuster, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will be showing in IMAX.

If you just read that and screamed "Are you kidding me?!" then I'm sad to inform you that no, I am not.

Better news: Eclipse will NOT be shot in true IMAX format (like The Dark Knight or Transformers 2), but rather will be shot using conventional cameras, with the print then being stretched to IMAX proportions (a la Star Trek).

Anybody who has watched a movie in this format already knows that the larger picture size ultimately comes at the expense of picture quality. This means that Bella's hyper-ventilations, Edward's bored stares and Jacob's chiseled abs will now be softer and blurrier than ever! Awesome!

Of course, the studio is selling us a much prettier scenario. From the official press release:

Twilight moviegoers will have a whole new way to experience this next installment of the series, with the enhanced image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience putting them IN the movie...The IMAX release puts us on the event film calendar for 2010, and we’re very excited to work with IMAX to bring a new kind of film to the IMAX theatre network.”

And in case you were wondering about what all Eclipse will be about, the press release helps to explain that too!

In The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.

Does the decision between love and friendship really qualify as "the most important decision" in someone's life? I wonder which Bella will pick - love, friendship... love, friendship... Hmmm.... LOVE MAYBE???

Twilight Saga fans rejoice if you'd like, but don't be fooled: you will be paying higher ticket prices for lower quality of picture, and unless director David Slade has epic LOTR-style vampire vs. werewolf battles in mind, I don't see why this steamy supernatural love triangle needs to be blown up into IMAX proportions.

Maybe the Twiehard nation can fill me in?

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hits theaters (and IMAX) on June 30, 2010.
