A Twilight TV show is officially in development from Lionsgate. Based on the best-selling book series by Stephenie Meyer, The Twilight Saga movie franchise began in 2008, introducing the world to Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as the human Bella Swan and vampire Edward Cullen, two star-crossed lovers in Forks, Washington. Despite garnering generally negative reviews from critics, the five Twilight movies were a massive commercial success that collectively grossed more than $3.4 billion worldwide.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Twilight is officially getting the television treatment. Lionsgate is in early development on a "series version" of Meyer's books. Because the Twilight TV show is still in the very early stages of development, it does not yet have a writer or platform attached. THR's sources say Meyer is expected to be involved in the television adaptation.

What The Twilight TV Show Could Be About

In the very early stages of development, it's unclear what the Twilight TV show will be about. Five years after Breaking Dawn - Part 2 ended The Twilight Saga on the big screen for the time being, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer declared “there are a lot more stories to be told, and we’re ready to tell them when our creators are ready to tell those stories.” These comments were made in reference to both The Hunger Games and Twilight franchises, two of the biggest IPs in Lionsgate's library.

Feltheimer's earlier comments would suggest the Twilight TV show is telling a new story, though plans could have changed since those comments were made in 2017. There is a chance the Twilight TV show is another straight-up adaptation of Meyer's four-book saga, which sounds like the case based on the report saying they are developing a "series version" of the author's books. The Twilight report comes soon after the announcement that Max is developing a Harry Potter TV show remake that would adapt J.K. Rowling's books, with the controversial author attached as an executive producer.

The fact the last Harry Potter movie, The Deathly Hallows – Part 2, came out in 2011, makes the timing of the TV remake questionable. The last Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn – Part 2, came out more recently than that in 2012, which presents the exact same problem. Instead of another straight-up adaptation of Meyer's books, it would be wise for the TV show to tell a new story set in the Twilight universe, possibly based on one of the author's companion novels, such as such as The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner.
