The destined relationship between Jacob Black and Renesmee Cullen in the Twilight saga is one of the series' more uncomfortable features. Jacob imprints on Bella and Edward's half-vampire daughter seconds after her birth. The werewolf occupies a brotherly role in Renesmee's life in Breaking Dawn, though it is speculated that his feelings will progress romantically when she is fully grown.

Jacob's imprint on Nessie remains a divisive plot point amongst Twilight fans. Many agree that the werewolf's relationship with the half-vampire is uneasy, and Jacob should have imprinted on another character instead.

Bella Swan

Bella and Jacob Black

Bella was Jacob's first love interest in the Twilight saga, and it would have made more sense if the werewolf had imprinted on her instead of Renesmee. Before Breaking Dawn, Bella was human as well as closer to Jacob's age.

Jacob's love for Bella was unrequited, as she ultimately chose to be with Edward. Perhaps imprinting would have strengthened their romance.

Leah Clearwater

Leah Clearwater from the Twilight saga

Leah is the only female werewolf in the Twilight series. Her relationship with Jacob is initially hostile, but they understand each other more in Breaking Dawn after Leah leaves Sam's pack to follow Jacob.

Leah is Jacob's second-in-command and they share several similar qualities. Pursuing a romance with another werewolf would have made more sense for Jacob than imprinting on Renesmee.

Jessica Stanley

Jessica and Bella walking together in Twilight

Jacob has a brief interaction with Jessica in Twilight when Bella and her school friends encounter the Quileutes at La Push. Their characters never converse, but it would have been an interesting twist if Jacob imprinted on Bella's friend.

Like pre-vampire Bella, Jessica was human and almost the same age as Jacob. The werewolf may have been happier with Jessica than Bella's half-vampire daughter.

Angela Weber

Angela in Twilight

Angela was another friend of Bella's who attended Forks High School alongside the Cullens. Angela is quieter and more reserved than Jessica. In the books, she is described as being kindhearted and insightful.

Angela dated Eric in the Twilight books, though she could have left her high school boyfriend if Jacob had imprinted on her. Angela's calm nature may have tempered Jacob's brash, fiery attitude.

Alice Cullen

Jacob and Alice are natural enemies. Jacob is a werewolf and Alice is a vampire, yet the two find unlikely ground in Breaking Dawn and become tentative friends during Bella's pregnancy.

Jacob liked Alice more than the other Cullen sister, Rosalie. Alice is more eccentric and less conventional, something that Jacob admires. A romance between Bella's best friend and Edward's sister could have been an interesting pairing.

Rosalie Hale

Nikki Reed as Rosalie Hale

Rosalie and Jacob have a frosty relationship in Breaking Dawn, but they could have slowly developed their understanding of and romantic feelings for each other. Opposites can attract, and both characters could have brought out new qualities within each other.

This pairing is unlikely, yet Jacob imprinting on the blonde vampire would have been less uncomfortable than imprinting on a newborn Renesmee. Rosalie and Jacob challenged each other and encouraged each other's inner fire.

Bree Tanner

Bree Tanner features in Eclipse as a member of Victoria's army of newborn vampires. Her second life is tragically cut short by the Volturi after she accompanies the newborns during their attack against the Cullens' and Jacob's pack.

If Jacob had imprinted on Bree, then the werewolves would have had no choice but to protect her from the evil vampires. Bree could have led a happier life with Jacob in Forks. The Cullens could have taught her to adjust to their vegetarian diet and the young vampire could had led a peaceful second life.

Edward Cullen

A romance between Jacob and Edward would have been the ultimate subversion of love triangle tropes. Edward is a vampire and Jacob's sworn enemy, but Jacob could have overcome this if he imprinted on him, bypassing Bella in favor of her vampire boyfriend.

If Jacob and Edward had fallen in love instead, then Bella may not have become a vampire. Renesmee would never have been born for Jacob to imprint on her, preventing their controversial connection.

Sam Uley

Jacob follows Sam as his alpha before asserting his claim to pack leadership in Breaking Dawn. Imprinting on Sam would have united both alphas and brought both werewolf packs together.

Sam could have reciprocated Jacob's feelings if he hadn't imprinted on Emily. Both werewolves could have led the Quileutes against the vampires, their natural enemies.

Emily Young

Alternatively, Jacob could have imprinted on Sam's fated fiancee, Emily Young. This would have caused a new war between the packs, spearheaded by Jacob and Sam. The werewolf alphas could have fought each other for Emily's love, triggering another love triangle in the Twilight story.

A war among the werewolves would have been an interesting climax for Jacob's arc. Emily was older and human, making her a more compatible companion than Renesmee. Jacob could have lived a peaceful life in La Push with Emily, far away from the Cullens and vampire business.
