The Twilight series is one of the most successful fantasy series of all time, and it’s also one of the most well-known and loved romance stories. While many people loved the series when they were growing up, as they’ve gotten older, they see more of the issues with the story.

One way that Twilight often falls short is giving the characters good, fulfilling story arcs, and there are many characters from the series who deserved more than what they got.

Renesmee Cullen

Renesmee in Breaking Dawn

Renesmee is the strange half-human, half-vampire child of Edward and Bella. For some strange reason instead of aging much more slowly given being half-vampire, she actually ages really quickly and then stops aging which just seemed like an attempt to let Jacob get a love interest.

The entire relationship with Jacob was weird and disturbing and basically set it up so Renesmee was tied to this relationship and never had much of a choice in the direction of her life.

Emily Young

Sam and Emily looking at one another in The Twilight Saga

Emily Young is Sam Uley’s fiance, and they got together after Sam imprinted on her. The entire imprinting thing seems to take away so much agency from everyone involved but especially many of the women in the series.

While Emily seems to be happy, her role is mostly just to take care of the werewolves, and she could have been a cool character if given more scenes.

Rosalie Hale

Rosalie Hale in Twilight

Rosalie Hale is a member of the Cullen family who has a truly tragic backstory, and she’s actually quite compelling as a character. She can be cold and opinionated, and she doesn’t just go along with the rest of her family all the time.

Unfortunately, she’s often painted as being a bad person even though many of her points and viewpoints made a lot of sense given what happened to her in the past.

Billy Black

Billy Black

Billy Black is Jacob’s father and is also a member of the Tribal Council for the Quileute tribe. Billy is a rather smart character who knows a lot of what is going on with the werewolves and vampires, and the main reason he deserved better is that he was interesting and didn’t get enough book or screen time.

There are many side characters in the series who were more compelling than the main characters.

Angela Weber

Eric and Angela from Twilight

Angela Weber is one of Bella’s high school friends after she moves to Forks. Truthfully, all of Bella’s human friends kind of get the short end of things in the end as Bella is a pretty bad friend.

All of her human friends are made out to be somewhat silly and immature, and this isn’t fair to them. Angela also definitely deserved better in terms of romantic relationships.

Jacob Black

Jacob Black is an interesting character because he does some things that are really unlikeable and has some serious flaws, but he also got written in a way that felt unfair. He started out so likable and kind, and he became angrier as the series went on.

Then, in an effort to give everyone a happy ending, Jacob was written to imprint on a baby which really ruined his character.

Esme Cullen

Elizabeth Reaser as Esme Cullen

Esme Cullen might be the matriarch of the Cullen family, but she has almost no personality. She doesn't really do much, have any special powers, or have any importance in the plot.

She is, unfortunately, one of many female characters from the series who mostly just seem to be around to nurture others and not get the character development they deserve. Esme could have been made to be a lot more compelling.

Bree Tanner

Bree Tanner might be a minor character in the series, but she has one of the most tragic stories. She was one of the newborn vampires that Victoria created to fight the Cullens, and she was only 16 when she was turned.

Even though she was an innocent victim in all of this, she was then murdered by the Volturi despite the Cullens' attempts to save her. She was only a teenager and didn’t deserve this fate.

Leah Clearwater

Leah Clearwater from the Twilight saga

Leah Clearwater gets one of the worst situations of any character in the books. She is firstly another victim of imprinting when she loses Sam when he imprints on another woman.

Then, she becomes a werewolf and has to deal with being in the pack when Sam doesn’t want her around. It didn’t seem right that Leah was met with such disdain by most of the others in the pack, and there was a good deal of sexism that seemed to be at play.

Bella Swan

Bella Swan played by Kristen Stewart in Twilight.

Bella Swan is a protagonist that many people have critiqued because she’s so helpless. Her entire life revolves around the men in her life, and she is a bad example of harmful romance tropes.

Her relationships with both Jacob and Edward have some unhealthy elements, and she doesn’t really seem to have her own dreams or personality outside of those relationships. It’s a shame she wasn’t written to be at least a little more independent.
