Do you remember the late 2000s when everyone (mostly teenage girls) were obsessed with vampires? The Twilight saga dominated film screens and book sales. Authors and screenwriters wanted to replicate what Twilight author Stephenie Meyer created. But if you take a closer look at the books and films, Twilight has some serious problems, especially in the relationship department.

The series has several memorable relationships, including Bella and Edward, Bella and Jacob, and the Cullen family. Some of these couples are adorable while others are borderline toxic. The relationships would be questionable in real life. Take a look at five unhealthy relationships from Twilight, and five of the more wholesome, fun relationships.

Unhealthy: Sam Uley And Leah Clearwater

Leah Clearwater in the woods in Twilight

Sam Uley (Chaske Spencer) and Leah Clearwater’s relationship is explained further in the books, and it’s definitely a sad tale. The Quileute tribe members dated for three years, and Leah (Julia Jones) deeply loved him. But Sam treated Leah poorly, and one day, he vanished. He returned two weeks later, and he didn’t talk to her. He didn’t tell her that he had turned into a werewolf, but Leah tried to give him space.

All of this went out the window when Emily Young (Tinsel Korey), Leah’s second cousin, visited. Sam imprinted, an involuntary mechanism by which Quileute members find their soulmates, on Emily immediately. He broke up with Leah the same day. Harsh, much? Sam’s rejection of Leah changed her, and she was always bitter and closed-off. Her character development was hinged on her relationship with Sam. She definitely deserved better.

Even though Sam broke Leah’s heart, his relationship with Emily is entirely different. The two seem to genuinely love each other and have a healthy, committed relationship. They became the golden couple for the wolf pack because they learned what it meant to have someone who was your “other half.”

Emily helps with the wolf pack whichever way she can. She’s a supportive partner. Yes, Sam might have lost control and slashed Emily’s face (not cool, by the way), but it served as a lesson for everyone to be careful with their newfound gifts.

Unhealthy: Mike Newton And Jessica Stanley

Mike Newton (Michael Welch) and Jessica Stanley (Anna Kendrick) are your typical high school couple. When Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) moves to Forks, Washington in the first movie, Mike is infatuated with her. He continually tries to win her affections. However, when Bella mentions that Jessica has a crush on him, he decides to pursue that relationship. This results in a messy, unconventional relationship that never should have happened.

Both characters are fundamentally insecure. Jessica isn’t the most loyal friend, and Mike is flirtatious and can be a jerk. They dated, broke up, and somehow got back together before Bella and Edward’s wedding in Breaking Dawn: Part 1. Let’s just hope they didn’t end up together in the long run.

Healthy: Charlie Swan And Sue Clearwater

Charlie and Sue in Twilight

This relationship was unexpected but definitely sweet. Charlie Swan (Billy Burke) was always Bella’s single father. He was alone, but in Breaking Dawn, viewers found out he started a relationship with Sue Clearwater (Alex Rice), the widow of Charlie’s good friend, Harry.

In Breaking Dawn, Charlie copes with the death of his friend, Billy Black (Jacob’s father). Sue comforts Charlie and this grows into a relationship. Their companionship is compassionate, loving, and strong. Sue is familiar with the vampire and werewolf world, so she offers plenty of wisdom to Charlie. He finally has someone to take care of him, and fans love this loving, healthy couple.

Unhealthy: Jacob Black And Renesmee Cullen

Bella hugs renesmee, while Edward and Jacob watch

The whole concept of imprinting in the Twilight saga is pretty creepy, but Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) takes it to a whole new level. He imprints on Bella and Edward’s newborn daughter, Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy), just hours after she was born. He imprints on a baby. Just think about that for a second.

While the books explain that imprinting isn’t romantic at these stages, it’s still weird. Jacob chased after Bella throughout the entire saga, but then it’s decided his eventual soulmate will be her daughter. Bella and Edward, say hello to your future son-in-law.

Healthy: Emmett Cullen And Rosalie Hale

Emmett and Rosalie standing together

To outsiders, the Cullens are a strange family made up of “siblings” that date each other. But within the vampire circle, you envy the relationships. Emmett Cullen (Kellan Lutz) and Rosalie Hale (Nikki Reed) are very similar people. They’re both strong, stubborn, and they like to approach things firsthand and take action.

Rosalie was originally “changed” into a vampire to become Edward’s significant other, but he rejected her. When Rosalie later saved Emmett’s life after he was mauled by a bear, it was evident that it was love at first sight. This love seemed to mend both of their broken hearts. In addition, they share the same birthday, which proves they were always meant to be soulmates.

Unhealthy: Bella Swan And Jacob Black

Bella and Jacob were never an actual couple, but you have to classify them as a relationship because there were plenty of fans on Team Jacob. For the most part, Jacob is obsessed with Bella, but he’s always in the “friend zone.”

In New Moon, Jacob and Bella grow particularly close, but it’s complicated. Bella still loves Edward, no matter what. He’s her soulmate and nothing could change that. However, Jacob still tries to pursue her, and some fans think he’s controlling. How would he behave if they were in an actual relationship? The two work better as friends.

Healthy: Alice Cullen And Jasper Hale

Alice looks at Jasper in Twilight

Alice Cullen (Ashley Greene) and Jasper Hale (Jackson Rathbone) are one of the more adorable couples in the Twilight saga. They’re both somewhat quirky in their own unique ways. She can see the future and he can manipulate others’ emotions.

Jasper changed a lot for Alice to be with her and her family. He became a vegetarian for her. They clearly understand one another and accept each other for their abilities and issues. Before meeting Alice, Jasper was sad and lonely. He doesn’t have to ever worry about being lonely with Alice. Their relationship is sweet and reciprocal.

Unhealthy: Bella Swan And Edward Cullen

The Twilight saga focuses on the relationship between Bella Swan—a human—and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson)—a vampire. They’re the main couple of the franchise, but that doesn’t mean fans particularly like them. They have many problematic elements. Edward displays many controlling behaviors. He also repeatedly watches her sleep at night without her knowledge. In addition, Bella is easily obsessed with him.

It’s an unhealthy relationship. Bella falls in love with Edward at a very young age and she never has the chance to truly grow up. She gets married right out of high school, becomes pregnant, and then “changes” into a vampire. Their relationship has more issues than positives. While teenage girls might like their relationship, it’s not something to emulate.

Healthy: Carlisle And Esme Cullen

Carlisle and Esme in The Twilight Saga

Carlisle (Peter Facinelli) and Esme (Elizabeth Reaser) are the “parents” of the Cullen clan. They definitely have the most stable relationship of the entire series. Carlisle met Esme after she broke her leg as a human. She tried to commit suicide, but he “changed” her into a vampire to save her life. It’s a love story fans didn’t know they needed, but they loved it.

Carlisle and Esme have the least problematic relationship of the saga. Their commitment to each other and their wisdom serve as the glue that holds the Cullen family together. Overall, they’re a sweet, loving couple, and you couldn’t imagine the Twilight saga without them.
