The satisfying end to The Vampire Diaries universe may have come and gone, but the original series will always have a place in the hearts of TVD diehards. It all began in the enigmatic town of Mystic Falls — more specifically Mystic Falls High School where Elena and her friends met a centuries-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore.
The school became a mainstay for a few seasons of the show, and a battleground for supernatural wars as well. Elena, Caroline, and Bonnie tried to maintain some semblance of normalcy when they went to school, but some things about Mystic Falls High School just don't add up.
All The Dances
High schools do love their dances, but TVD had one too many balls to seem normal. There were two Decade Dances, a Monster Ball, as well as prom, all with short time spans between them. Caroline changed through The Vampire Diaries, but her penchant for organizing dances stayed constant.
The characters loved to dress up and go frolic in the school gym a lot more than they actually studied. The number of school dances seemed even more awkward because the town itself had several Miss Mystic pageants and parties thrown by families like the Mikaelsons.
The Number Of Student Deaths
With the onslaught of vampires, werewolves, and Originals in the town, poor human students had to bear the brunt of their wrath. Students like Vicki Donovan, Sarah, and Aimee Bradley were victims of supernatural crimes, and while some TVD characters died and came back to life, they weren't so fortunate.
The deaths of these students were permanent, and April Young nearly suffered the same fate. The school, however, didn't seem too fazed by so many deaths of young people. They should have launched an investigation at the very least.
Nobody Noticed The Supernatural Fights
Since every villain on The Vampire Diaries had beef with Elena, Bonnie, Caroline and company, the school often became a hotbed of much conflict. Rebekah and Klaus attacked and held students hostage, Alaric himself chased down and vandalized the building, but the school authorities just kind of went with it.
Either it was an open secret, or some complex planning by the supes to restore the school to its original state, which seems unlikely. Broken doors, fires, shattered glass, and more never bothered Mystic Falls High.
History Was The Only Class They Seemed To Have
Many teen dramas have magic and conflict in them, but The Vampire Diaries pushed its characters' education right to the backseat. They were hardly ever shown in class or studying. The first season did depict some football coaching and games, but the Coach himself died soon after.
The only lessons the gang seemed to attend at all were Alaric Saltzman's history classes, and they also hung out with the teacher outside school hours.
No Homework
As the fate of Mystic Falls and the world hung in the balance, Elena and the Salvatores were the only ones who could shoulder the responsibility of tipping the scales towards good and away from evil. This meant that everyone, from Matt to Elena to Bonnie, were on vampire duty - but neither of them ever seemed to struggle with schoolwork.
Elena wrote in her journal but didn't seem to prepare for any tests or exams at any point. Sure, Bonnie and Caroline could have bewitched their way out of homework, but the school seemed notoriously lenient.
The Lack Of Staff
In the same vein, there were hardly any school teachers or even janitors who roamed the halls of Mystic Falls High School, which was quite weird. When the big bads took over school dances or even an empty gym, there was never a janitor who burst onto the scene accidentally.
The only time fans got to see any teachers was when Elena and Damon went to a parent-teacher conference for Jeremy and compelled them to make him graduate. Alaric and Mr. Tanner represented the whole of Mystic Falls High.
The School Wasn't Protected By The Council
Since the targets of the Originals, Katherine, Silas, Heretics, and every other villain actually went to Mystic Falls High, one would think that the Founder's Council would extend some protection to the institution. Moreover, students like Tyler, Vicki, and Caroline turned into vampires and werewolves themselves.
Instead, the school was left without any shields or precautions in place, despite the Founders knowing about the history of magical activity in Mystic Falls.
How Some Students Graduated
Jeremy's graduation was compelled, but Elena's actions beg the question - how exactly did she manage to graduate? The older Gilbert constantly skipped class, did no school work, gave no finals, nor did she rue her sad academic status.
Students like Caroline could compel their teachers to pass them, so it seems likely that Elena called in a little favor with her vampire friends. This was the only way she and Stefan could have graduated.
The Way Students Went In And Out Of The Premises
Cutting class, walking out of lectures, and showing up to the parking lot before leaving again was common at Mystic Falls High, but this is not standard practice in most schools. Students are monitored and kept within school premises till the day ends, barring an emergency.
Of course, things worked differently here and students were free to walk in and out as they pleased. The suspicious lack of staff might explain this.
No Drug Policy
In the earlier seasons, Jeremy and Vicki are infamous for their drug use, but what really took the cake was the stoner's pit that existed on the school campus. Mystic Falls High did not care very much for the well-being of its students, so a drug policy was never put in place.
The offending students openly lit up whenever they wanted, and faced no consequences for their actions. Mystic Falls High School really fell short of doing even the bare minimum for its students.
