With so many new renewals of shows on the horizon, it is interesting to examine shows that have already come and gone. Many of the shows that aired years ago had a great run, however, their first season greatly differed from the rest of the show, sometimes resulting in a loss or gain of fans.

Shows like The Office and Agents of SHIELD changed drastically after their first season and continued in a positive direction until their show finale.

The Office

The Office TV show has stood the test of time, starting as a British sitcom, then making its way to the states. The Office, on the outside, is a brilliantly crafted mockumentary, but when examining the first season, fans can find it very easy to skip right past.

Because the first season has no substance, falls flat on the jokes, and fails to deliver the essence of the seasons that followed, this first season is not only easily skippable but starkly contrasts the other seasons. Needless to say, this first season drastically changed tonally from the other seasons.

Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation (2009-2015)

Like The Office, Parks and Recreation has the mockumentary style of filmmaking, and it too has a very easily skippable first season. It is highly suggested that fans skip the first season of Parks and Rec because of the number of people that season turned away. This was due to some awkward direction and attempts to make the show like its sort-of sister series, The Office.

After the bumpy first season, the show starts to pick up the pace, bringing the more positive and wholesome feelings with it. With this new tone taken in the subsequent seasons, the actors are easily able to bounce off of each other for comedic support, but that first season should be deleted.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

While Brooklyn Nine-Nine's first season is quite enjoyable, it still differs from the rest of the seasons. One major theme throughout the show is Jake Peralta's growth throughout the season.

That being said, in the seasons that followed, it is very noticeable that Andy Samberg settled into his role as Jake, and this was shown through his character. It is for these reasons that his character development is misplaced and misdirected during the first season.

Agents of SHIELD

While Agents of SHIELD is an incredible Marvel spin-off show, its first season needed some work. Despite being filmed in the 21st century, much of the dialogue seems almost stitched together and too staged quite like the films of the 1950s. That being said the writing shift from season 1 to season 2 was incredibly drastic and much needed.

It is clear that once the storytelling dynamic shifted, the show quickly picks up, and it becomes extremely encapsulating and fun to watch, however that first season defiantly turned some fans off from the show.

Supernatural

What started as a show saturated with horror elements, turned into a show more dedicated to exploring mythology and lore. While this change prompted some fans to drop the show, many fans enjoyed this change of pace.

On top of this change, later seasons focuses on an overarching story that took up the entire season rather than a week-to-week type show with episodes not relating to one another. Needless to say, Supernatural changed its show quite a bit between the first and last season.

friends addictive tv shows binge watch

FRIENDS was and remains to be one of the most iconic sitcoms to ever air on television, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the show's first season greatly contrasted its subsequent seasons. For one, many of the jokes fell flat. The actors did not bounce off of each for support, which allowed the dialogue to fall by the waist side.

On top of that, characters like Phoebe and Joey changed greatly going from decently understandable characters to the resident airheads on the show. That being said, the first season of FRIENDS, from both character development and storytelling regard, differed greatly from the other seasons.

Lucifer

Lucifer (2016-2021)

Lucifer's first season is quite different from the season that follows. Not only does the show change from a horror-themed show, but it switches to a more comedic show not only greatly contrasting the first season, but contrasting the horror theme as a whole.

On top of that, Lucifer starts as more of a procedural show than anything else, and soon after the first season, writers dropped that style of storytelling altogether, making Lucifer's other seasons quite different from its first.

Even though the Umbrella Academy has the same story every season (the siblings save the world from an apocalypse), the characters and their personalities shifted greatly between the first and second season.

The siblings in the first season start as detected from one another, almost against each other, and this mentality lasts until the end of the season. As soon as season 2 kicks off, even though there is still animosity, it is not nearly as intense as it was in the first season.

Legend of Korra

Last Airbender Legend of Korra TV show

Even though the Legend of Korra TV series is incredibly short, the first season still manages to differ greatly from the other three seasons. This differentiation, of course, is regarding Korra's personality and the story as a whole. In the first season, Korra is headstrong, arrogant, and willing to do anything no matter what rules she breaks. The show as a whole is mirroring Avatar the Last Airbender in that now Korra like Aang learns an element.

After this season, however, Korra softens, and her character traits shift so much so that she is almost a completely different person from the first season to the second. This character change also allowed the show to explore deeper more complex storylines, making the Legend of Korra a more thought-provoking TV series.

Stranger Things

One of the brilliant components of Stranger Things is the fact that fans get to see the main characters grow up on-screen. With that growth, comes a very first season that differs greatly from the subsequent seasons.

Because the kids are so young in the first season, not only is the storyline not as well-woven as the others, but the horror elements are toned down, whereas, in even the second season, horror becomes a major theme in the TV series as a whole thereby changing the theme of the entire TV drastically from the first season to the second, and continuing that trend.
