Thanks to Netflix's adaptation of Heartstopper, many TV fans are in the mood for romance. Though TV shows do chemistry tests and plan for couples in advance, they still sometimes manage to catch fans by surprise by featuring the first kiss when nobody expects it, in a way that shocks the audience.

These characters getting together isn't necessarily surprising for the fans, as they've all had some build-up prior to their first kiss, but the kiss came so out of nowhere it left the fans with a loud gasp, or the kiss happened in a way nobody expected it.

Jess And Rory (Gilmore Girls)

Rory and Jess kissing at Sookie's wedding on Gilmore Girls

Not many Gilmore Girls fans saw this kiss coming, especially because it was initiated by Rory and not Jess who was openly pursuing her up until then. It's very likely that the mixed emotions of Sookie's wedding, her mom and dad getting back together, and finally seeing Jess again was what made Rory impulsively kiss Jess.

Her reaction to it was really cute, as she seems stunned by her own actions and leaves immediately after, leaving Jess standing there like a love-sick puppy. Since Jess was previously gone and since Rory was still with Dean at the time, this kiss was a real shocker for everyone.

Logan And Veronica (Veronica Mars)

Veronica Mars and Logan Echolls kissing in "Weapons of Class Destruction"

This Veronica Mars kiss came as a huge surprise because the main emotion between Logan and Veronica up to that point was hostility, but of course, prior to that, they had a complicated history. But when Veronica gets in trouble and Logan overhears it on the phone, he comes to her rescue and even punches a federal agent several times.

His protective side makes Veronica see him differently and she gives him a chaste kiss in front of the motel, which results in Logan deepening the kiss. Even though they had amazing chemistry, the kiss, and everything that came after was a huge surprise for viewers.

Joey And Pacey (Dawson's Creek)

Joey and Pacey embrace in Dawson's Creek

Another one of those enemies-to-friends-to-lovers couples happened on Dawson's Creek, where the audience can see Pacey and Joey bickering all the time. They're pushed together because they're both friends with Dawson, but for a while, they don't seem to be friends at all.

Their relationship slowly evolves from the friendship they built, and they develop feelings for each other. But their first kiss at the side of the road still came as a surprise to many. Joey and Pacey are arguing, because he's confused as to why she keeps relying on him, and that's when he kisses her. Even though it took them a long time to figure out where they stand, that was the turning point for them both and their relationship in Dawson's Creek season 3 was the best of the season.

Amy And Jonah (Superstore)

Amy and Jonah getting together on Superstore was no surprise as it was obviously the plan from the beginning. But what did shock many viewers is when and how their first kiss happened. After watching them engage in some professional rivalry and humorous interactions, their first kiss was actually surprising.

The season 2 finale, which was ranked second best among the show's finales, features a tornado, Amy and Jonah seek shelter together, and he wraps his arms around her as if he wants to protect her. That's when she looks at him, and maybe Amy just didn't want to die without kissing Jonah at least once so she leaned in, and the rest was history.

Jackson And April (Grey's Anatomy)

April and Jackson kissing in Grey's Anatomy

Jackson and April appeared on Grey's Anatomy together after the hospital merger. Watching them become better friends regardless of how different they were was amazing, but their getting together by hooking up one night before the biggest exam of their lives was surprising at least.

It wasn't only surprising because they had their exam the next day, but also because April was saving herself for marriage and such a spontaneous kiss wasn't in character for her. Drinking and being high on punching a guy likely played a part in her decision.

Robin And Barney (How I Met Your Mother)

Barney and Robin were an unexpected couple on How I Met Your Mother, so their first kiss naturally was not seen coming. Even though it appeared that it was going to be just a casual hook-up from the scene, it later turned out to be much more.

After watching Robin's old music video and commenting on it together, Barney seemed to look at the video affectionately even though he commented that she was "lame" back then. The audience doesn't see exactly who initiated the kiss, as it starts mid-kiss, but at some point, they stopped watching the TV and started the kiss that would make Barney catch feelings.

Stiles And Lydia (Teen Wolf)

Stiles and Lydia kiss in Teen Wolf.

It was no secret for Teen Wolf fans that Stiles was almost creepily obsessed with Lydia at the beginning of the show, but nothing happened until Stiles got out of his own head about it. As a matter of fact, their first kiss wasn't even supposed to be romantic, despite the lighting and the soft music telling the audience otherwise.

Stiles was having a panic attack, and nobody could have anticipated that Lydia would kiss him to calm him down, but it turned into one of the best Stiles and Lydia scenes. It was a perfect culmination of romantic tension and had everything that made Stiles and Lydia's connection special, down to him complimenting her for how smart she was, showcasing he always saw her as more than just a pretty girl.

Ian And Mickey (Shameless)

Ian and Mickey embrace in Shameless

Fans of Shameless didn't know if these two would ever get to a place where they'd be able to express themselves romantically. They started mostly by hooking up, and Mickey would deny any glimpse of feelings between them. No kissing, no loving words of any kind.

It's actually jealousy that makes Mickey come out of his shell a bit, as Ian starts seeing an older guy that he says "isn't afraid to kiss him." So even though it was hard for him, Mickey takes note and kisses Ian impulsively right before going to rob a house. It's quick and only lasts a couple of seconds, but the look on Ian's face afterward is priceless.

Buffy And Spike (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

Buffy and Spike looking at each other

Spike and Buffy were the original enemies-to-lovers couple on TV and surprisingly they had more kisses prior to their real first one, but they were all influenced by some kind of spell, so the one that really counts as a first kiss was the one they shared at Bronze.

It was a surprise because this time, they weren't under a spell. Seemingly, Buffy sought comfort in Spike after some pretty rough events, even though she wouldn't talk to him at first. Later, they're shown kissing at Bronze. It was also pointedly shown during a Buffy The Vampire Slayer montage where Willow's relationship with Tara ends, so in a way, it was an ending and a beginning of something new between them.

Jess And Nick (New Girl)

Nick and Jess kiss for the first time

This kiss came as the biggest surprise of all because for the entirety of the New Girl episode Nick and Jess actually refused to kiss, even though they were peer-pressured into it and even locked in a room to kiss during a game of True American, to which Nick responded by nearly climbing out the window.

It turned out the reason he refused to kiss her was that he imagined their first kiss differently. After saying goodnight to everyone, they share a moment in the hallway, and the audience learns about his true reasons when he says "I'd meant something like that" after kissing her passionately. It was without the question one of the best kisses on TV and one that left fans in shock and reeling for days.
