Attack On Titan (8.53)

For many newer anime fans, season 1 of Attack on Titan had somewhat of a Game of Thrones effect on the mainstream. As far as shonen go, this adaptation of Hajime Isayama's manga is one of the most compelling. After spending their entire lives trapped within the walls of their city-state, Eren Jaeger and company join their armed ranks to combat the mysterious Titans that roam outside.

On top of the gripping action and fascinating characters, Attack on Titan has a tantalizing mystery at its core and a degree of political intrigue akin to what made HBO's acclaimed dark-fantasy series so addicting.

The Promised Neverland (8.55)

While the second season of The Promised Neverland failed to live up to expectations by a long shot for many fans, season 1 was a refreshingly intriguing and dark take on the shonen formula. Emma, Norman, and Ray live in an orphanage that seems to be a loving home, but a sinister mystery begins to unravel the deeper they delve into the mystery of the children that get adopted.

The cast of characters is more than likable enough to get emotionally invested, especially with the grim mystery element that drives the story forward. Even if season 2 fell flat, Kaiu Shirai's manga is finished for those eager to find out what happens next.

Demon Slayer (8.55)

2019 was a big year for new anime releases and Ufotable's adaptation of Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer was one of the ones that took the world by storm. It's a fairly straightforward use of genre conventions, but the studio's exceptional animation and horror-like elements in the worldbuilding make it an engaging watch. The recent Mugen Train anime movie -- and season 2 -- adaptation makes now a great time to start.

Death Note (8.63)

Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's Death Note has effectively become a modern classic for anime/manga fans from the 2000s. The bleak modern-day story is darkly enticing, featuring one of Shonen Jump Magazine's most cunning protagonistsDeath Note follows the bloody exploits of high-schooler Light Yagami, who has a warped perception of what it means to achieve a just society.

Through the help of the death note, his amoral shinigami companion Ryuk, and his mind for strategy, the series gives a compelling dark thriller to get immersed in. Likewise, L and Light provide one of the most exciting battles of wit and detective prowess in anime.

Gurren Lagann (8.64)

On its surface, Gurren Lagann looks like a typical action mech anime. Thankfully, though, this original story and studio Gainax's animation talents put together an anime that's more than skin deep. Gurren Lagann starts with Simon and Kamina, two friends who live in an underground settlement in hiding from the Spiral King and his mechas on the surface.

But what unfolds is an equal parts heartwrenching and wildly inspiring story about humanity's indomitable spirit and willpower when at its best, with stunning action to complement it. Even with only 27 episodes, Gurren Lagann's plot is impressively well-paced with rising stakes that feel genuine.

Cowboy Bebop (8.76)

Hajime Yatate's anime-original Cowboy Bebop is understandably regarded as an all-time great, with the '90s classic serving as one of the genre's highlights since its inception. This series is dripping with style, with an atmosphere and episodic story structure that masterfully blends neo-noir, western, and sci-fi elements.

Spike Spiegal, Jet, Fay, Ed, and their corgi Ein work as roaming bounty hunters in a world where humanity succeeded in ruining their hoe planet of earth. Cowboy Bebop gets incredibly introspective, exploring themes of loneliness, corporate corruption, letting go of the past, and existentialism. The live-action Cowboy Bebop Netflix adaptation unsurprisingly missed the mark, but the 26-episode original continues to stand the test of time.

Attack On Titan Season 3 (8.85)

Following the runaway success of the first season and the aforementioned Demon Slayer: Mugen Train movie, Ufotable recently wrapped up season 2. The story picks up from the tragic aftermath of the movie, with Tanjiro and the Demon Slayer Corps. forced to march on to tackle the next threat.

An Upper-Rank demon is hunting the women of the Entertainment District, with the main cast plus the Sound Pillar of the Corps. on the case. Season 2 is notably shorter than the first, but Ufotable and the cast deliver on the standards that the first set.

Attack On Titan: The Final Season (8.90)

Like with season 3, this score is the combined average of season 4 parts 1 and 2, with a third confirmed to be on the way in 2023. So far, the season has presented Attack on Titan with some of the darkest developments in the series, with the stakes getting exponentially higher and more political. The season sees studio MAPPA take over the reins from Wit, with the former doing an admirable job that's unsurprising for fans already familiar with their work.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (9.14)

For many veteran anime fans, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the best shonen series to date. This is the second time Hiromu Arakawa's manga has been adapted, and while the original anime was solid in its own right, Brotherhood is exceptional in its faithfulness to the source material. The story follows Edward and Alphonse Elric, two state-sanctioned alchemists orphaned by the death of their mother and their runaway father.

Alphonse's soul is bound to a suit of armor after the two attempted the dark alchemy of resurrection, which leads the two on a globetrotting quest through a rich, dense steampunk-fantasy setting that's emotionally resonant, action-packed, and filled with a cast of characters worth getting emotionally invested into.
