A reboot of Turner & Hooch is coming to Disney+, with Josh Peck in the starring role. Released in 1989, Turner & Hooch was a buddy cop comedy led by Tom Hanks and Beasley the Dog. Hanks played Scott Turner, a detective that reluctantly takes in Hooch (Beasley), after the murder of Hooch’s owner. Turner intends to honor his longtime friend by looking after the pet that was left behind, but Hooch’s destructive tendencies prove to be an immense change for the detective’s daily routine. The movie was a hit at the box office, making $71 million on a budget of $13 million. In the years since it premiered, Turner & Hooch has endured as a pop culture reference and attempts have been made to revisit the concept in the past.

NBC was involved with a television pilot based on Turner & Hooch in 1990. It aired in the summer, along with a truly bizarre pilot titled Poochinski. A separate effort was mounted by ABC, in the form of half-hour sitcom that featured Beasley reprising his role. None of those programs earned a series order. However, given the film’s easy and enjoyable premise, the 1989 classic is being reimagined once again as a television show.

Disney+ is moving forward with a reboot of Turner & Hooch, according to THR, granting the series a 12-episode order. Peck, known for starring in Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh, has been tapped for the main role. As for Peck’s costar, there’s no word yet on whether Hooch will be a real dog or CGI. The reboot comes from Matt Nix, the creator of Burn Notice and The Gifted.

Josh Peck in Grandfathered

The hour-long series will closely resemble the film on which it is based, though one key difference relates to Peck’s character and how he ends up inheriting his rather unlikely companion. Rather than a detective, Peck will play U.S. Marshall Scott Turner. Ambitious and reserved, Turner’s life is changed when he inherits an unruly dog. Turner soon realizes that the dog might just be the partner he needs, even if it’s unexpected.

The Turner & Hooch reboot, from the Disney-owned studio 20th Century Fox TV, is a high-profile gig for Peck considering that he’ll inevitably garner comparisons to Hanks. Since his breakout performance on Drake & Josh, the actor shared the screen with John Stamos in Grandfathered. Peck has also appeared in films such as Take the 10 and Danny Collins, which starred Al Pacino. He’ll now join the company of other leads in Disney+ reboots, which include updated takes on High School Musical and Lizzie McGuire.
