YouTube's Restricted Mode blocks mature content and the feature can easily be turned on or off from the settings menu. It is an optional setting that can be used by parents to ensure a secure viewing experience for their children. It is also one that's commonly used in schools, libraries and public institutions to filter out unsuitable content. The setting is turned off by default but can be enabled on the website, as well as the Android and iOS apps.

YouTube is one of the most popular streaming services in the world and offers content across almost every genre imaginable. It is also used by people across all age groups, including kids, which necessitates a feature like Restricted Mode that keeps them safe while offering a full, unrestricted experience to mature users. As mentioned, the feature can be enabled on all platforms, including desktops and mobile.

YouTube's Restricted Mode can be enabled or disabled on the website, as well as the mobile apps. On Windows, Linux, or Mac, navigate to YouTube using a browser and log in to the website. Once signed in, click on the profile icon in the top-right corner. From the drop-down menu, select 'Restricted Mode.' On the next page, toggle on the 'Activate Restricted Mode' option. This should enable Restricted Mode for YouTube in the current browser and YouTube will now filter out what it considers 'mature content' from the feed and searches. Unless also enabled elsewhere, the feature will still be disabled on other devices, and even on other browsers on the same device.

Enable Restricted Mode On The Mobile App

YouTube Dark Mode

To enable Restricted Mode on an iPhone, iPad or Android device, fire up the app and tap on the profile icon in the top-right corner. In the profile menu, select 'Settings' and then choose 'General' on the next page. Scroll down to the bottom and enable Restricted Mode by using the corresponding toggle. Restricted Mode is now enabled in the YouTube app on that particular device. For iPhone and iPad users, there is no 'General' section, so just scroll down a little on the 'Settings' page and toggle on Restricted Mode.

The Restricted Mode setting on YouTube has to be enabled or disabled individually on each device, as it does not sync across all devices. This is by design, as it allows users to have a full YouTube experience on one device while turning on a more restricted experience for children on a different device. It is also worth noting that the feature cannot be switched off by users if it has been enabled by an organization. Also, if the YouTube account is managed by parents with the Family Link app, then Restricted Mode can only be turned on or off from the parent's device, and not from the child's device.
