Invasions are a key part of the new action/adventure game, Deathloop, but some players may find them both irritating and unnecessary. If players want to break the loop in their own way without being interrupted by friends or strangers in the process, there is the possibility of turning this feature off.

Invasions are a part of Deathloop’s story. While Cole is trying to break the loop, Julianna is trying to protect it, creating the game's main conflict. Players always start as Cole and quickly encounter Julianna trying to get in their way. Julianna can either be a game-controlled AI or human players trying to disrupt another player’s run. Invasions begin after the player has completed “Welcome to Black Reef,” when they also gain Julianna as a playable character and unlock the ability to invade other players.

For Deathloop players who find the other human players annoying, there is a way to ensure they don’t interrupt a run. This must be done at very specific times, however, so it’s important for players to pay attention and not mash buttons until they can play again. These times are during the after-action screen and while setting up for a mission. At the top left with the player name and picture, there are three options:

  • Online: This mode allows anyone to take the reins of Julianna to disrupt runs. There are restrictions that prevent too many invasions during the same loop for players controlling Cole.
  • Friends-Only: In this mode, only friends can play as Julianna to disrupt runs. The restrictions are still in place, so multiple friends will not be able to take on personal assassination missions.
  • Single Player: This mode effectively turns off invasions. It allows only the AI Julianna to disrupt runs.

Protecting The Loop in Deathloop

How Long Deathloop Takes To Beat

It’s important for players to remember that they also have the option of disrupting other players’ games. Players have to complete the first two single-player missions to gain access to invasions, which can take quite a while as these missions aim to teach players everything they need to know to play Deathloop effectively. There are some fun bonuses available for playing as Julianna and invading other loops. For example, leveling up Julianna can unlock extra outfits for both Julianna and Cole.

Whatever players decide they want to focus on in Deathloop, the game has already proven to be a unique addition to its genre and is even being considered a contender for game of the year by some. Whether destroying or protecting the loop, players of all styles are sure to find something to enjoy in this eccentric game of cat and mouse.
