Warning: SPOILERS for chapter #89 of Dragon Ball Super.

Dragon Ball Super shows that Trunks, and not Goku, is the franchise's version of Superman. While fans usually like to compare Goku and Superman for their level of power (and for having basically the same origin story), Trunks' daily life in Dragon Ball Super is very similar to that of Clark Kent.

The Dragon Ball franchise usually dedicates very little time to the daily lives of its characters, concentrating instead on the epic fights with the fate of the universe at stake that fans have come to expect. The current arc of Dragon Ball Super, called the "Super Hero Arc", however, has shaken things up a bit. The protagonists are Goten and Trunks, now teenagers going to high school, who have taken a page from Gohan's book and created superhero identities, Saiyaman X-1 and X-2, to fight crime and evildoers. Managing a secret identity, however, is not the only thing that Trunks has in common with Superman.

trunks about to reveal his secret identity to mai in dragon ball super

Chapter #89 of Dragon Ball Super shows Goten and Trunks fighting against a new villain, Android Beta, who infiltrates their school under orders of Doctor Hero, to retrieve the disc containing Cell's blueprints stolen by the two kids. Mai, Pilaf's assistant who now lives at the Capsule Corporation, also goes to the same school, and she is caught up in the fight. After changing into his Saiyaman X-1 costume, Trunks saves Mai, who is impressed and charmed by the mysterious hero. When Trunks is about to reveal his secret identity to the girl he is in love with, Goten stops him because their classmates are gathered around and could hear it.

Trunks is now in a very uncomfortable situation. He has feelings for Mai, but the girl is actually falling for his superhero persona. This is similar to what Clark Kent had to go through in the early Superman stories. Lois Lane was swept away by the mighty, godlike Superman, and she ignored plain, regular Clark Kent, who could not confess his secret identity for fear of putting her in danger. In Trunks' case, however, there are not many reasons for not revealing his secret to Mai, who after all lives in the same house and is fully aware of the existence of Saiyans and their incredible powers.

One interesting subplot of this story is that, in Future Trunks' alternate future, he actually ends up with Mai. When Saiyaman X-1 saves her, she has a flash image of Future Trunks (whom she met during the Goku Black Saga). This complicated setup creates an interesting romantic comedy dynamic that Dragon Ball surely lacked until now. While Goku and Superman may share the same origin story, Trunks has really become Dragon Ball Super's version of Clark Kent.
