The Coen Brothers’ upcoming film, True Grit, is making waves with anyone lucky enough to see it early. In fact, many have called it the Coen Brothers’ masterpiece. Considering their career to date, that’s quite a claim.
Four new clips from the movie give us a little taste of what is to come on December 22nd.
While Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin headline the cast of True Grit, the lingering question mark is newcomer Hailee Steinfeld. The young actress portrays the protagonist of the film, Mattie Ross, and much of the film’s success or failure may ride on her shoulders. All four clips feature her prominently and her talent is on display.
If the trailers, clips and buzz so far is a testament to Steinfeld’s performance, she may be the talk of Hollywood for awhile. Her tone is mature and showcases a girl well beyond her years. Her voice is reminiscent of Cate Blanchett in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Steinfeld looks promising, but opposite three of the biggest leading men in movies, she will have her work cut out for her.
The following clips from Trailer Addict are mostly dialogue – a common thread in the Coen Brothers’ films. The clips sure look and sound good, but how will they play out in the overall scheme? Westerns definitely fit their style, both thematically and visually.
One Eyed Man
You Are Not Going
You’ve got to love Jeff Bridges’ scowl. Only a week prior to True Grit‘s release date, he will hit theaters as Kevin Flynn in TRON: Legacy. The two characters could not be more different – apart from the scraggly beards. But instead of battling himself (in digital form in TRON: Legacy), Bridges will have to put up with a relentless girl, a sarcastic Matt Damon, and a villainous Josh Brolin. In the first clip, he definitely channels The Dude from The Big Lebowski.
Matt Damon seems pretty cocky in his moments, as he talks Mattie Ross into allowing him to join her and Rooster Cogburn. There is a definite mystery to his character and it shows in the trailers and these clips. But the pride he exhibits is palpable and should play nicely against Bridges’ Cogburn.
The third clip definitely showcases the humor in True Grit. It wouldn’t be a Coen Brothers movie without some good laughs. The banter between Damon and Bridges should make for some fun scenes, but hopefully the film balances humor and plot development well.
True Grit has a great chance to take control of the Holiday season if Bridges’ other major film, TRON: Legacy, doesn’t have the firepower Disney hopes. Either way, the support is mounting for a True Grit Oscars run. But it seems this happens every time the Coen Brothers release a film. Not every one of their movies have been flawless, but this one has all the ingredients to be a great piece.
Are you looking forward to True Grit? Do these clips give you hope or make you weary? Sound off in the comments section below.
