There's nothing the Internet loves more than mashups (we've even put out some pretty cool ones ourselves), so it's no surprise to see that someone has already jumped on the just-released trailer for the Coen Brothers' True Grit.
Setting the dark, dramatic tone of True Grit against the Western-inspired landscape of Rango makes sense, but while it's an impressive effort, I think this mashup falls a bit short. I'm sure some folks will absolutely love it, but the big problem for me is in the character casting.
When you're dealing with one movie for visuals and one movie for sound, you don't have a lot of choice in selecting which characters will say what, but there must have been a better option than turning Jeff Bridges' super tough-guy Rooster Cogburn into a little female rat. Then there's the matter of Rango (voiced by Johnny Depp in the actual movie) being chosen to represent the Hailee Stanfield character in True Grit. It just didn't work for me, but you can decide for yourself.
Check out the mashup, lovingly entitled "Toon Grit", below.
Whether you love it or hate it, this effort should definitely inspire some other True Grit mashups in the near future. At the very least, it prompted me to re-watch the actual trailers for both films.
True Grit looks like it will be another fine effort from the Coens and I'm very eager to see how Jeff Bridges does filling John Wayne's HUGE shoes (or cowboy boots, as it were). Rango also looks like a lot of fun, particularly some of the bizarre dream-like sequences shown briefly in the trailer.
What did you think of the trailer mashup? Good, bad, indifferent? Suggestions for a better combination of movies for a True Grit mashup?
True Grit will be in theaters on December 25th.
Rango will be in theaters on March 4th, 2011.
