The new season, which is subtitled Night Country, follows two detectives played by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as they investigate the sudden disappearance of a group of men in Alaska.

Now, HBO has unveiled the first True Detective season 4 trailer, which can be watched below:

The teaser trailer introduces the dark and frigid land of Ennis, Alaska as the setting for the new season, as well as the two detectives, Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, who are assigned to solve the bone-chilling mystery.

Everything Revealed By The True Detective Season 4 Trailer

Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in True Detective Night Country

The teaser trailer for True Detective: Night Country provides the basic setup for the season's overall mystery without revealing too many specific details. On the last sunset of the year before the long night, eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. The prevailing theory is they went out on the ice to watch the sunset and disappeared due to a weather event. Foster's veteran detective, however, is treating their disappearance like a murder case. At one point, Danvers discovers a crooked spiral symbol related to the Carcosa murders from True Detective season 1.

The True Detective: Night Country trailer highlights how darkness will be an important motif throughout the season, which will also give it some significant horror vibes. The two detectives have to investigate amidst Alaska's infamous two-month period of pure darkness as they also confront the darkness within themselves. Based on the True Detective trailer, the lack of light, frigid temperatures, and perplexing case appear to have a significant effect on the hot-headed detectives and the escalating tensions between them. However, they agree to tolerate one another for just this one case.
