The rumored third season of True Detective is in the early stages of adding Mahershala Ali to its cast. In this current era of peak TV, when it feels like a new critically acclaimed series premieres every other month, few seasons of television from the past few years have ever been quite as well-received and popular as the first season of HBO's True Detective. Led by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the anthology series became an instant hit, with more momentum behind it than most series could ever dream of having. Unfortunately, that popularity slowly died down throughout the show's follow-up season, which was met with much harsher reviews from both critics and viewers alike.

It didn't come as much of a surprise then, when it was later announced by HBO that there may never be a third season of True Detective, with everyone's excitement for the property lessening significantly over the past few years since the second season's summer 2015 run. That is, until a few months ago when it was announced that a third season of True Detective was in development from both original creator Nic Pizzolatto and Deadwood creator David Milch.

While news surrounding the possible third season has been non-existent up until this point, it looks as though that may be starting to change. The Tracking Board is reporting that Moonlight star and Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is currently in talks for a lead role in the new True Detective season. With details being kept under wraps for the time being, there is no word on who Ali could be playing in the series. The report also states that while a deal between Ali and HBO has yet to close, insiders are confident it will go through soon.

Ali's casting in the show would mark a nice step forward for the crime series, which up until this point, has not had an African American lead in its two previous seasons. It doesn't hurt either that, in addition to just coming off of his Oscar win for his performance in Moonlight, Ali has had a stellar TV career so far, after playing prominent roles in two of Netflix's most popular shows, House of Cards and Marvel's Luke Cage. Ali was also just recently cast in Sony's Untitled Animated Spider-Man Movie.

Obviously, there's no telling as of right now who Ali could be playing in this season since details about its setting, time frame, and central premise have yet to be released. Considering the actor's wide range of past roles, it's possible that he could be one of the season's antagonists or protagonists. But with two of Hollywood's most enigmatic writers working together on the new season, and now with this exciting bit of casting news, it's looking increasingly more possible that True Detective season 3 could just be the comeback season that the show deserves.
