True Detective season 3 has added The Good Wife actress Mamie Gummer to the cast. HBO recently confirmed a 2019 premiere for the third season of the crime series from creator Nic Pizzolatto. Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali headlines the season 3 cast together with Blade star Stephen Dorff. Carmen Ejogo (Selma) has been named the female lead, and Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire) will also appear.

True Detective debuted on HBO in 2014 and immediately became a pop culture phenomenon. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as a pair of police investigators on the trail of a serial killer, the show boasted memorable performances, quotable dialog and riveting direction from Cary Fukunaga. After the acclaimed first season, HBO brought the show back in 2015 with a new setting and all new characters. Unfortunately, Fukunaga himself did not come back. Perhaps as a result of Fukunaga's absence, the second season was regarded as unfocused and unsatisfying, and the future of the series was cast in doubt. However, HBO ultimately decided to give it one more chance and went ahead with season 3. Pizzolatto remains on-board as the creative lead, joined by Deadwood writer David Milch and Green Room director Jeremy Saulnier.

With shooting reportedly set to commence in February, True Detective has added to its cast by nabbing Mamie Gummer (via THR). Gummer has a recurring role as Lucy Purcell, described as a young mother who finds herself at the center of a tragic crime.

True Detective season 3 not happening?

Most people still know Gummer as the daughter of Meryl Streep, though Gummer has begun establishing herself as an actress in her own right. Mother and daughter appeared together in the 2015 movie Ricki and the Flash. Gummer's earlier TV credits include the The Good Wife, Manhattan and The Collection. Looking ahead, Gummer will also appear opposite James Caan and Patricia Clarkson in the crime drama Out of the Blue. Gummer's sister Grace too has her own buzzing career, having played FBI agent Dom on Mr. Robot for the past two seasons.

True Detective season 3 takes place in the Ozarks and involves a mystery spread across three different time periods. The sprawling story set over decades recalls the 17-year Yellow King mystery of season 1. The Ozarks setting also promises a more rural flavor, along the lines of season 1. In the final analysis, the show perhaps made a mistake by shifting from Louisiana to California for season 2. Getting back to its roots, while bringing in new creative voices, may help True Detective regain its mojo.
