True Blood star Anna Paquin explains why news of the reboot was initially such a surprise. The actress portrayed Sookie Stackhouse in the HBO supernatural drama. It was created by Alan Ball and based on a series of novels by author Charlaine Harris.

True Blood was a hit for HBO, running from 2008 until 2014 and focusing on a world where humans and supernatural creatures coexist. Back in December, it was reported the series was getting the reboot treatment from Riverdale creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. At the time, Paquin revealed she had no idea a True Blood reboot was happening. Now, the actress is shedding some light on how she first received the news.

Paquin’s comments came during an interview with Collider, in which the actress also elaborated on her feelings regarding the reboot. Paquin does stress she hopes the updated version of the supernatural drama does well, pointing out the previous cast doesn’t own the story of True Blood. However, she also admits news of the show’s return caused some confusion initially. You can read Paquin’s quote below.

“[Author] Charlaine Harris didn’t even know it was happening. Everybody’s phones were blowing up. Cast and crew, by the way, were like, ‘Oh my God, your show is getting picked back up!’ and we were all like, ‘Huh? What?’”

Although it might seem like a given that actors would express interest in continuations of their own work, recent history serves as a reminder it’s not always the case. The stars of Charmed, with the exception of Shannen Doherty, have recently expressed extreme displeasure about the reboot. Elsewhere, although more diplomatic in tone, the alums of Gossip Girl and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have suggested they’re not hugely invested in watching an update of the works they helped create. Paquin strikes the same tone in her remarks, giving her blessing but also alluding to the fact any new True Blood stories are separate from the ones established in the original. If the reboot succeeds, then it could even improve on its predecessor. At this early stage, that remains to be seen.

The reaction from fans has been divided. Some have argued it is way too soon for a True Blood reboot, pointing out the series won't have anything new to add after such a short time off the air. Others have taken a different point of criticism, expressing their belief Aguirre-Sacasa won't be able to improve on the flaws that were already a prominent aspect of the original. For some, undeniably, there is an element of intrigue regarding how this update will manage to distinguish itself. But, as Paquin’s words make clear, nearly everyone was caught off guard when news of the True Blood reboot was first announced.
