HBO has released two new behind-the-scenes clips from season three of True Blood, the first featuring neighborhood nice guy Sam Merlotte (played by Sam Trammell), and the second focusing on the always-fiesty Tara Thorton (Rutina Wesley).
We've also gotten our grabby little hands on a new image featuring Alcide the werewolf (played by Joe Manganiello of One Tree Hill fame) together with Sookie and an interview with Carrie Preston, the actress who plays Arlene, talking about her future with the show amid rumors she's leaving to join the cast of The Good Wife. We even scooped up some information on a True Blood comic book spinoff.
BEHIND THE SCENES CLIPS
Sam seems to have become more of a wry tough guy during the break, handling a shotgun in his face with quite the sense of humor.
Maybe this newfound attitude will catch Sookie's attention! Check out the new clip:
This second clip finds Tara in dire straits and she seems to be showing a color that we haven't seen much of previously: fear.
Abject terror is an unusual emotion for Tara, no? Looks like she's in for it. But if she can come out from under Maryann's control, she can probably handle whatever it is that she's in.
The plan is to continue to release a new True Blood production clip each Sunday after encore presentations of season two, so stay tuned. In the meantime, you can check out the season 3 clip featuring Eric Northman (played by Alex Skarsgård).
SOOKIE AND THE WEREWOLF
Now for the new character image that debuted exclusively over at Entertainment Weekly. Alcide the werewolf and Sookie look nervous and are standing pretty close together. Ohhhh Sookie, will you ever learn?

True Blood's producer, Alan Ball (Six Feet Under, American Beauty), had this to say about the relationship between Sookie and Alcide:
“There is definitely some [sexual] energy between the two of them… It’s not like either one of them is looking for romance, but they’re thrown into several intense situations [and] it’s hard not to bond on a deeper level… The first shirtless scene [Joe] had I was like, ‘Who has those abs?’… He’s in crazy peak physical condition. He’s eating nothing but pure protein. And of course, this being True Blood, he’s already shot his first naked scene. Hello, werewolves when they shift — no clothes!”
TRUE BLOOD COMIC BOOK
Speaking of Alan Ball, here's what he had to say about a True Blood spinoff in comic book form:
"I'm really looking forward to exploring this new format. Comics have no limitations, things that we could never do on the show because of time and budgetary constraints we can do in a comic. The writers of the show and I are closely involved in the creative aspects of the comic, plotting art stories, characters - they exist in the same world but it's a completely different story than what you will see on TV."
New True Blood stories sound good to me and I can't wait to see what they do in a restraint-free environment. Maybe more vampire effects that would cost boatloads to pull off on TV!
THE FATE OF ARLENE
On to what Carrie Preston (who does a wonderful job with the role of Arlene) had to say to AOL Television about rumors of her leaving True Blood for The Good Wife:
"Well, obviously I can't comment on what's happening on 'True Blood,' but I will say that I go through stretches where they don't need me...the writers are servicing many, many people. We all end up -- even Anna [Paquin] and Stephen [Moyer] -- having a stretch of time where we're not working... 'The Good Wife' caught me during one of those times, so I did an episode and right now, we're in discussions with 'True Blood' for me to do more...
It was a fun character on 'The Good Wife'... It was only an offer for one episode with the hope that it would recur. We didn't want to make a big deal out of it. I don't know who leaked it or how it got leaked, but then everybody just took a hold of it. It was pretty funny."
So it seems Arlene isn't going anywhere. That puts a smile on my face. Fans of the show already know that the number of story lines and characters can lead to lengthy absences for any individual actor - no need to fret y'all!
True Blood will start airing its third season on June 13th!
