Which characters were turned into vampires throughout True Blood? The existence of vampires was an integral part of the series over the course of its seven-season run. True Blood was based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries by author Charlaine Harris.

On the surface, True Blood was about a telepathic waitress, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who got herself involved in the lives of local vampires. As the series went on, the existence of vampires took a stab at the deeper theme as it handled acceptance and the rights of the species. When True Blood began, vampires were only outed to exist for a few years so many citizens were not pleased with their presence in the community.

Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård), and Pam Swynford de Beaufort (Kristin Bauer van Straten) were some of the more prominent vampires in True Blood. There were a number of others presented through the hierarchy and various organizations in the country such as the Vampire Authority. The vampire population inevitably grew over the series' 80 episodes. Some became progenies through consent, while others were taken as a victim by force. Here's a breakdown of all the character in True Blood that became vampires in the order they were turned.

True Blood cast

Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll): Jessica grew up in a very strict Christian family. She was kidnapped by a group of vampires and presented to Bill as part of his trial in the show's debut season. The Magister decided Bill's punishment would be to turn the young girl into a vampire. Bill reluctantly obliged, forcing Jessica into a new stage of life. She initially struggled but she eventually took control of her powers. Bill viewed Jessica as if she was his daughter and he was always proud to be her maker. At one point, Jessica had a fling with Jason (Ryan Kwanten) but she later married Hoyt (Jim Parrack).

Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian): Reverend Steve Newlin was the head of the Fellowship of the Sun, a church that spread fear and hatred towards vampires. He served as a primary antagonist in season 2 for holding Eric's maker, Godric, hostage. At the same time, he also tried to force Jason into joining the church. Steve later went missing and returned to the series in season 4 proclaiming he was now a "Proud Gay American Vampire." When the Vampire Authority was destroyed, he was taken to the camp. During the rescue, Eric wouldn't allow Steve to be saved as revenge for what he did to Godric. Steve was then killed by sunlight at the hands of his ex-wife.

Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley): Tara was the best friend of Sookie Stackhouse from a young age. She often took refuge at the Stackhouse home to get away from her abusive mother. Tara was very intelligent but her temper often got her in trouble. After she was taken hostage by a sociopathic vampire, Tara moved to New Orleans and became an MMA fighter. She eventually made her way back to Bon Temps and took a bullet for Sookie during an altercation. To save Tara, Pam turned her into a vampire. Tara was initially upset but she later accepted her new lifestyle. She was killed in the first episode of season 7 as she tried to protect her mother from a Hep-V vampire.
