'TRON: Uprising' Trailer Returns to the (Animated) Grid

Tron Uprising trailer

TRON: Legacy may not have been quite the box office behemoth that Disney was hoping for, but it still grossed around $395 million worldwide in theaters, and was overall successful enough to keep the Tron franchise alive. Besides the numerous future merchandizing tie-ins for the series, there's also an animated spinoff show titled TRON: Uprising in development as well.

The official trailer for Uprising will be available for viewing on the upcoming TRON: Legacy DVD/Blu-ray, but it's now online for those who'd like an advanced look at another trip to The Grid.

TRON: Uprising takes place prior to the events of Legacy and revolves around Beck (voice of Elijah Wood), a young program who begins a revolution against the tyrannical Clu 2.0 (Fred Tatasciore, reprising his role from the TRON: Evolution video game) and his military head, General Tesler (Lance Henriksen). Aiding Beck on his quest are the likes of a female program, Mara (Mandy Moore), and the legendary warrior Tron himself (Bruce Boxleitner).

Whereas something like Daft Punk's "Derezzed" music video blended the visual style of the original Tron movie with the cutting-edge graphics from Legacy, Uprising strictly imitates the latter - despite being a prequel that's meant to links the two films. That quibble aside, the animation is stylish and does a good job of recreating Legacy's version of The Grid in only two dimensions.

Check out the trailer for TRON: Uprising below:

Legacy's plot was on par with that of a video game, which is arguably the kind of narrative that should work better in Uprising, given its more episodic structure. The lightcycle races and disc duels won't be as engaging as those on display in Legacy, but the animated action should tide fans over - at least until the possible arrival of Tron 3 in the future (*knock on wood*).

TRON: Uprising will show as a 10-part micro-series this fall on Disney XD, and will begin airing regularly during the summer of 2012.
