'TRON: Legacy': Daft Punk Music Video & Sound Design Featurette

Tron Legacy movie

The penultimate TRON Tuesday is upon us and with it comes more material in promotion of Walt Disney Picture's TRON: Legacy, which the company will release in all its 3D glory next week.

Today we take a break from ogling the film's glistening vehicles or its state-of-the-art visual design and instead get to work our ears by listening to Daft Punk's audio work on the film, along with the voices of the sound recorders, mixers, and editors that were onboard for TRON: Legacy.

Disney released its own TRON: Legacy music video set to the cyber-punk tunes of Daft Punk's "Derezzed" - a term unique to the TRON universe that refers to the death of your digital self ("program") - all the way back in October. The French electronic musical duo's TRON: Legacy soundtrack was released today, along with a new "Derezzed" music video that pays homage to the original TRON and strikes a visual chord that lies somewhere between the old-school CGI visuals of the 1982 film and the cutting-edge style of TRON: Legacy.

While they computer graphics from the original TRON look clunky by today's standards and are amusingly limited in terms of color palette, shape, and texture, they pushed the envelope for digitally-created F/X back in the early 1980s - even though, ironically, TRON was disqualified from the competition for Best Visual Effects Oscar because the use of computers was considered "cheating" by the Academy at the time.

For those unfamiliar with the original TRON and were not able to snag a copy before Disney pulled it from store shelves, watch this lightcycle race sequence from the 1982 film to get a feel of what "The Grid" looked like back in the day:

Daft Punk's new "Derezzed" music video is visually a hybrid piece that retains the retro look of the 1982 TRON, but modifies it enough to create more of a modern-day aesthetic design. Add to that two "programs" charging one another down  in a gladiatorial lightcycle race, a TRON-ized parrot, and a brief cameo by Olivia Wilde, and you have (if nothing else) one memorable video.

TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and his technical crew have gone all out in their attempt to make a film a truly immersive 3D experience - so much that certain theaters equipped with a tech known as Iosono will screen the movie with 3D sound, which allows for individual audio F/X to be projected from any single location in the viewing room.

TRON: Legacy hits 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters on December 17th, 2010.
