Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto tweeted the title of the upcoming Tron 3, only to delete it moments later. The first film in the Disney franchise arrived in 1982 and was followed up with a sequel, Tron: Legacy, nearly 30 years later. While the first film in the series wasn’t exactly a blockbuster for Disney, it managed to break new ground with its mixture of live-action elements as well as backlit and computer animation.

The sci-fi story, which focused on a computer programmer called Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) who hacks his way into a computer-generated world, was nominated for two Academy Awards. When Legacy was released in 2010, Flynn’s son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) was charged with entering a computer-generated world known as “the Grid” in order to find his father after he’d gone missing decades earlier. Both films featured somewhat similar plots, but Legacy took Tron’s visual appeal to a new level, adding impressive 3D and a brooding soundtrack from multi-award-winning French house duo, Daft Punk.

Ten years after Legacy arrived, not only has a third Tron film been officially confirmed, but Jared Leto is also on board to star in the upcoming production. Leto has made it clear that he’s been a fan of the franchise since he was a child and that many new surprises await in Tron 3. Since that time, his excitement appears to have gotten the better of him, and in a new Tweet via his official account, Leto revealed that the third Tron film’s official title will be Tron: Ares. Not long after announcing this, Leto deleted the Tweet, but Twitter user @LonelyDC_Stan managed to snap a screenshot of the reveal, which can be seen below:

It is currently unclear whether Tron: Ares is simply a working title and for this reason, Leto was asked to delete the tweet, or whether Disney simply wasn’t ready to announce the title via the star’s Twitter account. At any rate, as of this writing, Disney has neither confirmed nor denied the title. As for what “Ares” could mean, there is presently no definitive answer. The internet is, of course, alive with rumors, with the most plausible-sounding one being that Ares is actually the name of Leto’s character in the upcoming sequel. There’s no history of a character by that name in either Tron film, meaning that if Leto is playing Ares, the new film will likely focus on the character in a substantial way.

Should Tron: Ares actually focus on Leto’s character, it's always interesting to see him play a villain. And as details of the new film slowly but surely become available, it likely won’t take long for fans to formulate who Ares is or what he wants. It’s still too early for much conjecture, but there’s a good chance that the next big step in narrowing down what Tron 3 will be about will arrive once more insight on the film’s cast is gained. If Hedlund is returning, it makes sense that a villain could be gunning for Sam and that villain could very well be Leto’s character, Ares.
