On the second watch of Trolls World Tour and Frozen 2, an odd coincidence can be spotted: both films share the same plot twist. Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Elsa (Idina Menzel) lead two of the biggest animated movies of the last few months. Frozen 2 debuted on Disney+ just four months after its November 2019 release, while Trolls World Tour was the first major film to launch directly on VOD.

The similarities between the two films begin with the fact that they're both sequels to animated musicals with royal protagonists. Trolls World Tour takes Queen Poppy (Kendrick) and her friend Branch (Justin Timberlake) on a quest to prevent Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom) and the Hard Rock Trolls from conquering the other five Troll lands of Pop, Techno, Country, Classical, and Funk. Meanwhile, Frozen 2 tells the story of Queen Elsa (Menzel) and her journey to the Enchanted Forest with her sister Anna (Kristen Bell) to figure out the meaning of the mysterious voice she hears in her head after coming to terms with her powers in the first Frozen film.

The plot twist in Frozen 2 comes when Elsa and her friends venture into the magical mist of the Enchanted Forest. Once inside, they encounter the Northuldra people, an indigenous tribe (inspired by real-life natives) who were betrayed by Runeard (Jeremy Sisto), former king of Arendelle and grandfather of Anna and Elsa. The sisters realize that he had built a dam in the land of the Northuldra to limit their resources and ward off their magic, which plunged them into everlasting confinement and conflict with the kingdom. In the plot twist of Trolls World Tour, something very similar happens: Poppy, Branch (Justin Timberlake), and Hickory (Sam Rockwell) arrive in the kingdom of the Funk Trolls and find out that the real reason behind the Troll tribes splitting up was that Poppy's dad, King Peppy (director Walt Dorhn), had previously stolen the six magical strings to make pop remixes of all the other Troll music.

Elsa and Poppy find themselves in an equal need to fix the wrongdoings of their ancestors, embarking on an adventure with their close friends and struggling to reunify the lands that they just discovered. Both characters undergo the same transformation from unsuspecting royalty, limited within their known world, to selfless heroines. However, the multiple distinctive qualities of both films, such as the playful mix of musical genres in Trolls World Tour and the return of the cherished soundtrack in Frozen 2, offer two unique experiences that the audience can't help but enjoy without giving a second thought to other similarities between the two, like the protagonists ultimately accepting the other tribes as part of themselves (Elsa chooses to stay with the Northuldra and Poppy reunites the six Troll lands, including the Hard Rock tribe). Each movie portrays the same theme of empathy and acceptance in its own way.

Similarities like these are not a bad thing. Every story has been told before. That's why superhero films are still so successful despite following a somewhat distinguishable pattern and animated musicals based on ancient tales keep entertaining children all around the world today. The nature of stories means that connections can always be made - even with seemingly different movies, like the resemblance of Anna's epic journey of courage and self-discovery to that of Frodo from The Lord of The Rings. Besides, Frozen 2 and Trolls World Tour belong to the same genre and are directed to the same audience, and both have proven to find their own success in their own right.
