Paramount has set a June 2022 release date for their new Transformers movie. Currently, Paramount has two different Transformers movies in development, and it's unclear which one is receiving this new release date. It may be that Paramount has yet to decide which project will move into production, and in the meantime, they want to secure an upcoming date for whichever movie they choose to pursue. Recently, release dates have been shifting in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it's probably in Paramount's best interest to claim the date they want now before another film gets delayed and takes it.

Following the disastrous performance of Transformers: The Last Knight and the moderate success of Bumblebee, Paramount has been reassessing the future of their Transformers franchise. This has involved developing two different Transformers movies to be the franchise's next installment. One is reportedly a follow-up to 2018's Bumblebee, while the other is a spinoff based on the Transformers series, Beast Wars. James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, Murder Mystery) is writing the supposed Beast Wars movie, and Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Army of the Dead) is working on the script set in the Bumblebee universe.

Per Deadline, Paramount has now selected a date for their new Transformers movie - June 24, 2022. Nothing besides the date has been revealed as this time, so it remains unknown just which of the Transformers movies is taking the date. Still, the news of a date at all suggests more information about these in development Transformers movies could be revealed soon.

Transformers Beast Wars

Predicting which of the two scripts Paramount is planning to make into their next Transformers movie is tricky because both have qualities that'd make them the right choice. Releasing another movie set in the same universe as Bumblebee, either as a direct follow-up or another standalone, builds off the success of the 2018 movie. Plus, the ending to Bumblebee clearly sets up where a sequel could go, with Optimus Prime returning and more Autobots on the way.

A Beast Wars movie, however, has the potential to tap into a similar nostalgia that first fueled the success of Michael Bay's Transformers movies. For those adults who were kids growing up in the 1990s, it's battles between the Maximals and Predacons that they'll remember from Saturday mornings, not the Autobots and Decepticons. And seeing as it's been over a decade since Paramount released their first live-action adaptation of the popular 1980s cartoon and toy line, now is the perfect time to move on to adapting the Transformers that were made for that next generation.
