A theater accidentally mashed up the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and The Little Mermaid trailers, and it's actually perfect. With the Disney live-action remake set to hit theaters at the end of the month and the Transformers prequel premiering in early June, both films have been flooding media outlets with promotional materials. Before the two highly-anticipated movies compete with one another at the box office, their trailers have teased a wishful movie crossover unlike anyone has ever seen. While waiting for the feature presentation to begin at a theater, Scott Gustin recorded the screen when both the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and The Little Mermaid trailers were projected at the same time.

Showing the visuals of both films, but only the audio for The Little Mermaid, the trailer mash-up synced nearly perfectly in a possible reimagining of the bombastic giant robot franchise as a Disney musical. Ariel's final note from the classic song "Part of Your World" closes out the trailers with the audience applauding the happy theatrical accident.

Will Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Top The Little Mermaid at the Box Office?

Halle Bailey as Ariel in The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid continues a recent trend from Walt Disney Studios where prominent animated films from the company's rich filmography are given live-action remakes. Starring Halle Bailey as the titular character, the musical fantasy is set to release May 26, only two weeks before Transformers: Rise of the Beasts stomps its way into theaters. Although recent Disney remakes have been relatively hit-or-miss regarding box office returns, The Little Mermaid's projected box office could prove to be a tough film to beat.

Although several of Disney's latest remakes went straight to Disney+ to include Pinocchio and Peter Pan & Wendy, both Mulan and Cruella hit pandemic-restricted theaters and were met with less-than-stellar returns. However, Aladdin and The Lion King's 2019 pre-pandemic releases managed to pull in over $1 billion at the box office. On the other hand, Dumbo's release earlier that year resulted in failure, earning $353 million but needing over $500 million to make a profit.

Beauty and the Beast (2017) also crossed the $1 billion mark, the third remade film from Disney's Renaissance Era film to do so. With The Little Mermaid (1989) ushering in the lineup of highly-regarded releases, perhaps its upcoming remake will become the second film this year to cross $1 billion behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' return to theaters after five years could prove a challenge for The Little Mermaid, despite the robot-centric adventures diminishing returns with Transformers: The Last Knight and Bumblebee.
