Elijah Wood looks set to bring the scares, after taking to the stage at E3 to share the first gameplay footage for horror title Transference. The Lord of the Rings star spoke as part of Ubisoft's E3 2018 press conference, discussing more about the upcoming game from SpectreVision. The player is effectively trapped inside a corrupted simulation of a scientist's family, and must uncover the mysteries within in order to escape.

Transference is a game that has intrigued many. The narrative-based horror game blends movie-like footage with more traditional gameplay elements to try and create a truly unnerving experience, and is the first collaboration between Wood's SpectreVision and publisher Ubisoft. Mixing together puzzles with strong story elements played out by live actors, there's the potential for Transference to be an extremely effective horror game.

The first reveal of gameplay from the title certainly builds that reputation. Although the trailer doesn't give much away, there's enough here to really set the heart racing and it has a truly tense atmosphere to boot. Those interested in seeing the gameplay trailer can do so at the top of this article.

All in all, Transference looks to be shaping up nicely - at least from a plot perspective. Games about the failures of technology often do well, particularly when the player is put into the perspective of one using the tech in question, as seen with the critical darling SOMA. Meanwhile, the hints of a larger, personal conspiracy within the family unit gives a much more intimate feel, and one that could really tell a chilling tale if it all works correctly.

That, however, is going to be the key question. Although Transference looks very interesting as it stands, it still remains to be seen whether the dual elements of movie-like action and the more standard elements create a cohesive game in terms of feel. If Transference can nail that down, then it could prove a big hit when it launches this fall for both traditional platforms and VR headsets.

Transference stood out a little from some of the other games in Ubisoft's press conference, with its very dark nature giving it a major presence over the likes of the Star Fox-related Starlink and Ubisoft mainstays like Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Hopefully, the game's rather unique feel will lead to a memorable - if horrifying - game experience when it launches.
