New fan art for Toy Story shows what the characters could look like in a live-action movie. Toy Story made waves at the box office when it was released in 1995 and put Pixar on the map. The success of the first fully computer-animated movie launched one of Pixar’s most popular franchises resulting in three sequels. Now over 25 years later, Buzz, Woody, and Andy/Bonnie's other toys have become some of the most recognized characters in Disney/Pixar’s history.
Toy Story 3 seemed like the logical end to the series, satisfyingly wrapping up Andy’s storyline with him going off to college and passing his toys onto another child. However, Pixar decided to release Toy Story 4 in 2019 to give Woody a proper ending and to reunite him with Bo-Peep. Some preferred Toy Story 4’s ending to the third film, but it did split up the gang that audiences have come to love. Toy Story 5 seems unlikely at this point; however, Disney clearly isn’t ready to leave the characters behind. Lightyear, a spin-off focusing on the “real” astronaut the toy is based on, is in production with Chris Evans, and Disney+ released a set of Toy Story shorts within its Pixar Popcorn series at the beginning of the year.
The franchise may be continuing, but artist Hossein Diba has presented a different spin on the Toy Story characters. Diba's new artwork shows what Buzz, Woody, Jesse, Mr. Potato Head, and the Aliens would look like in real life. Check out his depictions of the characters below:
In an attempt to reinvent their most popular franchises, the House of Mouse has released a handful of live-action reboots of Disney classics in recent years. The studio has seen varying results both critically and financially, with successes like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast and flops like Mulan. Multiple live-action Disney reboots are in development, but the studio has yet to adapt a Pixar film. Some Pixar films could potentially do well as live-action, but Toy Story isn’t one of them.
If a live-action Toy Story movie were to come about, the studio would likely do a mix of live-action and CGI. It’s fun to see the characters come to life in this art as humans, but it’s safe to say the idea would not go over well with fans or critics. Morphing Buzz, Woody, and the other toys into humans would drastically change the film's plot, and the movie’s title wouldn’t even make sense anymore. Thankfully, the odds of Disney trying to adapt Toy Story seem pretty low.
