The Toy Story franchise is arguably one of the greatest in movie history. Regardless of genres, these four movies stand up against any other franchise due to the incredibly high quality of storytelling, with each film having a perfect balance between emotion and comedy. Throughout the films, the focus is very much on the main characters, Woody and Buzz Lightyear. While they don't always get along, it is through their adventures that we enjoy the Toy Story world.

However, the reason the franchise is so successful is down to the amazing cast of supporting characters that back them up. Even though they don't get as much screen time as others, these characters are crucial to the franchise and within this list, we will rank the 10 best.

Forky

Forky Asks a Question

The newest supporting character to join the Toy Story franchise, Forky joined the world in Toy Story 4. Although he isn't technically a toy, which becomes a running joke throughout the movie, Forky is a superb character that brings tons of humor to the latest movie. While he is confused about whether he is a toy or trash, Forky does prove to be a very loyal character.

Forky ends up trying to please Bonnie, but it is his adventure with Woody throughout the movie that is the best. His constant questions make him feel like a young child nagging a parent, which provides laughs for adult audiences. And his childish nature connects with younger fans, making him one of the best supporting characters to date.

Wheezy

Wheezy sings in Toy Story

Wheezy is a massively underrated character from the Toy Story franchise, and that is a shame because he is also one of the best. The singing squeaky penguin that loses his squeak almost meets a tragic end until Woody puts himself on the line to save him. While Wheezy isn't showcased as much as the other characters on this list, that doesn't make him a weaker character.

In Toy Story 2 he plays a crucial part in the film, with his side story being emotional and exhilarating. Of course, another reason he is one of the best supporting characters is because of his singing. Who can forget Wheezy busting out 'You've Got A Friend In Me' at the end of the film, a truly iconic moment from the franchise?

Bo Peep

Bo from Toy Story looking strong and determined.

This might seem like a very low ranking for Bo Peep, considering that she plays such a significant role in Toy Story 4. However, Bo isn't involved in Toy Story 3 in any capacity and she doesn't have a huge role in the original or the second films either. That makes it hard to rank her higher than other supporting characters, even though she is great. Bo Peep from the first film and the most recent are incredibly different.

No longer a damsel in distress, Bo Peep has become a self-sufficient woman when we meet her again in the fourth movie. While it was a huge change in her character, Bo still had the same loveable personality that won Woody's heart in the first place. She is a crucial character to his story, and therefore a very important supporting character.

Green Aliens

The Green Aliens always just seem to pop up at the final moment to save the day, don't they? That is their role in the franchise and it is Toy Story's 'get out of jail' card if you will. But they are perfect for that, being cute and funny, the group of aliens is simply brilliant. They might not have much of a role and only say limited words, but that doesn't mean they aren't great.

The Green Aliens have become some of Pixar's most popular characters, with Disney going as far as to make theme park rides about them. Their loyalty to the group and hilarious belief that the Potato Heads are their parents is incredible. They provide some very funny, important moments and deserve a place on this list.

Hamm

The king of the one-liner, nobody brings out the jokes quite as Hamm does in the Toy Story franchise. Hamm borders on the line of being grumpy at times, but he is kind and loving at his core, always wanting what's best for the group. While he isn't normally the first person on board with plans and ideas, he does always come around eventually.

Having a wise comment to say about everything, Hamm often provides the adult jokes of the movies, making him a firm favorite with older audiences. On top of his wisecrack jokes, Hamm is also the character of Evil Dr. Pork Chop. This is the character Andy creates for him while he plays with his toys, and showcases a new side to Hamm that is also very fun.

Rex

Rex in Toy Story

The way that Pixar handled Rex's character proves why the animation company is so successful. Most would presume that a T-Rex toy would be incredibly scary, loud and dominant. But that is where Pixar totally flipped things, making Rex the total opposite of that. Constantly being scared of even the smallest thing, Rex is certainly not a dinosaur to be feared.

However, it is in his fear that he became so popular amongst fans as he always tries to push himself for the sake of the group. Providing some of Toy Story's greatest lines, Rex is absolutely hilarious and while he doesn't have the largest role in the movies, he is consistently around.

Bullseye

How can you not love Bullseye? Woody's loyal horse, he is a fantastic character that joins the franchise in Toy Story 2 and remained part of the gang ever since. Bullseye is one of the only characters that cannot speak, for some reason, but that doesn't stop him from being amazing.

It's in the facial expressions for Bullseye, and, of course, Pixar nails it. You know exactly how Bullseye is feeling without him saying anything and that makes him so loveable and cute while adding humor. He is always there for Woody when needed, and tries his best to support him throughout the movies.

Slinky

When it comes to characters being loyal to Woody, they don't get any better than Slinky. This stretch toy is always there for his best pal, no matter what, and normally ends up having to put his body on the line for the sake of the mission.

Slinky can be very funny at times with some of the things he comes out with. However, the main reason he is a great supporting character is because of how much impact he has in all the movies. Unlike some, Slinky really does have a key role throughout. His kindness is something that is perfect for a family-friendly movie, and it really is impossible not to love this adorable character.

Mr. Potato Head

From one original character to another, Mr. Potato Head is also involved in all four movies and is one of the funniest characters in Toy Story. Unlike the rest of the gang, Mr. Potato Head isn't always positive and happy to go along with Woody and Buzz's plans.

As an older, grumpier character, he isn't always pleased with the ideas, but he is dragged along with them regardless. When Mrs. Potato Head is added to the equation, he only ends up becoming funnier as well. He might be grumpy, but he is loveable and that's what makes him such a great character in all of the movies.

Jessie

Jessie from Toy Story

Jessie is one of the first characters that spring to mind when you think of Toy Story.  Jessie plays a crucial part in Toy Story 2 and is actually one of the main characters in the movie. Her role does diminish in the following sequels, although she still remains heavily featured. Jessie really brought the girl power into the franchise in a big way.

With a heartbreaking backstory, it is a tough decision for Jessie to join Andy's toy selection and risk being abandoned again. Jessie is a key member of the group who is more than capable of holding her own as well.
