Toy Story 5 doesn't even have a release date yet, but a new fan-made pitch video imagines an emotional and perfect ending to Woody and Buzz's story. Toy Story 4 was released in 2019 to strong reviews from audiences and critics alike, with the movie seemingly concluding Woody's journey. Earlier this month, however, it was announced that a fifth film in the popular franchise would be moving forward.
Toy Story 5 story details have not yet been officially released, but ArtSpear Entertainment on YouTube has put together a highly compelling pitch video imagining what will become of Tom Hanks' Woody, Tim Allen's Buzz, and the rest of the toys. Check out the pitch below:
The emotional story outlined in the video would give Woody's story a sense of finality, with the toy finally "dying" after so many years of adventures. In addition to featuring another touching goodbye between Woody and Buzz, Hanks' toy would also get to reunite with Andy, now an old man, finally telling him the truth about his living group of toys.
Can Toy Story 5's Ending Beat Toy Story 4's?
After the franchise first got its start back in 1995, Woody and Buzz have gone on a number of exciting adventures. Although previous past installments weren't afraid to really dig into the emotion of Woody and Buzz's story, Toy Story 4 hit this aspect even harder, delivering what felt like a final farewell. After finally reuniting with Bo Peep, Woody opts to stay with her at the carnival and live as a "Lost Toy," with Buzz and the rest of the gang heading back to Bonnie after saying their goodbyes.
The effectiveness of Toy Story 4's ending creates a fairly large hurdle for the fifth film to overcome. After putting such a neat and tidy bow on Woody and Buzz's story, the fifth will need to tell a story that feels worthy of undoing this beautiful conclusion. If Toy Story 5 is to be the last one, it will also have to somehow top what came before it and deliver something that truly feels final. As the pitch video above suggests, Woody's death may actually be the best way to do this.
That being said, Toy Story is, after all, a franchise meant to be watched by children. It's unclear if Disney would actually be willing to kill off either Woody or Buzz in the movie, even if it's done in a touching and thoughtful way. It's unclear exactly what story will be told in the next sequel, but the success of the previous film means the creative talent behind Toy Story 5 already has a daunting task ahead of them.
