Toy Story 4: [SPOILER]'s Ending Is Just Like Captain America's (But Better)

Toy Story 4 Woody Avengers Endgame Captain America

Toy Story 4 marked the ending of Woody’s arc in the saga, very much like Avengers: Endgame did with Steve Rogers/Captain America, but in a better way. Nine years after the apparent end of Toy Story, Pixar gave Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the toys one more adventure in Toy Story 4, which introduced a new toy, Forky, and brought back an old one, Bo Peep.

Meanwhile, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Endgame arrived to undo the damage done in Avengers: Infinity War and to close the arcs of some of the original Avengers, most notably Iron Man and Captain America. Both Woody and Captain America served as leaders in their respective franchises, and their arcs came to an end in 2019 in similar ways, but the future of one is more promising than the other.

Woody and Captain America leave their groups to stay with the girl they love, and they pass on their respective mantles. In Toy Story 4, Woody decides to start a new life with Bo Peep as a free toy, and makes Jessie the new sheriff. In Avengers: EndgameCaptain America goes back in time to return the Infinity Stones, but stays in the past to live with Peggy Carter. Back to the present day, an elderly Steve Rogers passes his shield and mantle to Sam Wilson. Woody retires as Bonnie’s toy, but he’s serving another purpose as a free toy, as he’s helping kids at the carnival. Captain America goes back in time to live the life he didn’t have next to Peggy, while his past self continues with his heroic tasks. Time-traveling is weird sometimes.

Unlike Captain America, Woody did have a fulfilling goodbye with his friends/family, whereas Cap said goodbye to Bucky (in their very own way) before going back in time, and then to Sam when giving him the shield, but not to the rest of the Avengers. While Toy Story seems to be done for real this time, and the Avengers as fans knew them are also done, Woody’s story isn’t over yet – but Captain America’s is. After Toy Story 4, Woody is starting a new journey as a free toy, and could be back in the future in a TV special or a Pixar short. As for Captain America, there will be no new stories for him in the MCU.

Woody’s final journey in Toy Story 4 was better than Captain America’s in Avengers: Endgame because he got to say a proper goodbye to his people and began a new and exciting chapter in his life that could still be explore in other types of media. Captain America left “discreetly”, without saying goodbye to the rest, and closing his own story. What fans can be sure of is that they both enjoyed their lives next to the person they love and didn’t regret their decisions.
