Toy Story 3 has the darkest scene in the franchise, and one alternate version assembled as a gag would have ended on the audience traumatizing scene. The original Toy Story from 1995 was both Pixar's first movie and the first fully-computed animated film too. The movie's great characters and comedy saw it become a major success and established Pixar's winning formula. A sequel was quickly put in production but while it was originally supposed to go straight to VHS, early footage proved so promising Disney upgraded the project to theatrical.

While Pixar has made many classic animated adventures, including Up and The Incredibles, the Toy Story franchise is arguably their crowning achievement. While the third movie was originally set to be the ending, Toy Story 4 was later put into development and proved to be an even more fitting conclusion. While there (likely) won't be a fifth movie, Chris Evans will voice the title character for the upcoming animated spinoff Lightyear, which will provide the origin for the "real" Buzz that the toys were based off.

While still an entertaining adventure, Toy Story 3 still put its main characters through the wringer. The movie saw Andy's toys thrown away as he prepares to head to college, and they find themselves in a daycare center that's under the thumb of evil toy bear Lotso. Toy Story 3 is arguably the darkest of the series, which is best displayed in the scene where the toys are facing down an incinerator after Lotso betrays them. For a moment it appears they're doomed and they hold hands as they face their fate - only to get rescued by a claw controlled by the aliens at the last moment. However, one macabre edit made as a gag ended on this scene.

During an interview with HuffPost in 2017, Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich and storyboard artist and future Coco co-helmer Adrian Molina revealed the movie's editorial crew put together a version that ended on the incinerator scene. This darker Toy Story 3 alternate ending went to credits as the toys held hands and slide towards the fire, but - naturally - it was never seriously considered as a real ending to the sequel.

Given that Toy Story 3's incinerator scene still left audiences shaken in its current version, there's no telling what would have happened if that's how the movie ended too. Still, it's easy to see how the crew would get a chuckle out of such a bleak ending. Thankfully, the sequel gave most of its toys a happy ending where they become part of young Bonnie's collection, which is where they still are when Toy Story 4 begins.
