Brett Ratner's new heist comedy Tower Heist has an okay buzz going amongst casual moviegoers (if laughs measured in random movie theaters is anything to judge by) - however, more hardcore fans aren't yet convinced that the film is going to bring the laughs.
The first Tower Heist trailer had a heavyweight comedy duo at its center (Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy, specifically) - and yet the biggest laugh in that trailer went to Gabourey Sidibe, the girl who starred in the least funny movie ever (Precious).
The second Tower Heist trailer is now online, and thankfully it spreads the screen time around instead of investing heavily in Stiller and Murphy. If nothing else, this is a film that has a strong supporting cast, including actors like Alan Alda, Michael Peña, Téa Leoni, Casey Affleck, Judd Hirsch, and "Bueller" himself, Matthew Broderick. Each of those aforementioned actors has brought the funny before, and they're an eclectic but nonetheless promising roster for a comedic ensemble.
Check out a synopsis for Tower Heist, then move on to trailer #2:
There are a lot of good "moments" in the trailer where the supporting cast each gets a chance to shine - but on the whole, Tower Heist seems to be lacking that big, belly-rolling, laugh-out-loud moment that drives people to the theater. Still, there are enough scattered bits to probably appeal to a sizeable audience - you know, those same people who actually appreciate the phrase "from the director of 'Rush Hour.'"
We'll see how it all plays out when Tower Heist hits theaters on November 4, 2011.
