With Tower of Fantasy now released globally, fans and possible players will want to know which characters from the Genshin Impact-esque game are playable. The gacha MMO RPG adventure game currently has a small but strong roster of characters to play. Since it has to compete with the current king of gacha adventure games Genshin Impact, it will be necessary for the characters to live up to the hype. In appearance, background, and play style, Tower of Fantasy characters will need to reach a high bar to compete.

Tower of Fantasy boasts a sci-fi world with an anime style and takes place on the colonized world of Aida. On Aida, humans set up a mining structure called the Tower of Fantasy to mine a nearby comet for a new energy source, Omnium. However, the energy eventually harmed and changed the planet, causing all humans to wear suppressors to protect themselves from radiation and mutation. Now the planet is chaotic with different factions jockeying for power and mutants running free across the land.

Currently in the global server 15 characters are playable. With a handful more only available on the China server, where the game has been out since December 2021. However, the characters are actually AI built into the weapons the player uses, dubbed Simulacrum. When a Simulacrum is unlocked, the player has the option to use their appearance. However, only one Simulacrum can be used at a time, and the players' customizable character returns for dialogue scenes. When it comes to the weapons there seems to be no limit (unlike Genshin Impact, which could benefit from new weapons). However, it is limited to currently four ability types that accompany weapons: Grievous, which causes enemies to take more damage; Ice Shell which will frostbite enemies and reduce their weapon charge rate; Flame will ignite enemies and reduces their healing; and Volt, which paralyzes targets preventing them from receiving buffs.

Tower of Fantasy's characters feel and look unique at first glance. Whether their stories and overall play styles can compete with other gacha games will be the key as more players get to play them. The characters are split into two main groups, SR and SSR, the latter being the harder to acquire. Much like upgrading weapons in Genshin Impact, receiving a character's duplicate grants an upgrade, but in this case, the weapon is given an advancement skill. The current characters and their weapons are as follows:

  • SR Echo - Weapon: Thunderous Halberd (Type Volt)
  • SR Pepper - Weapon: Staff of Scars (Type Volt)
  • SR Bai Ling - Weapon: Nightingale's Feather (Type Grievous)
  • SR Ene - Weapon: Pummeler (Type Ice Shell)
  • SR Hilda - Weapon: The Terminator (Type Ice Shell)
  • SSR Zero - Weapon: Negating Cube (Type Flame)
  • SSR Meryl - Weapon: Rosy Edge (Type Ice Shell)
  • SSR Samir - Dual EM Stars (Type Volt)
  • SSR Huma - Molten Shield V2 (Type Flame)
  • SSR Tsubasa - Icewind Arrow (Type Ice Shell)
  • SSR Shiro - Chakram of the Seas (Type Grievous)
  • SSR King - Scythe of the Crow (Type Flame)
  • SSR Cocoritter - Absolute Zero (Type Ice Shell)
  • SSR Crow - Thunderblades (Type Volt)
  • SSR Nemesis - Venus (Type Volt)

Most likely, the characters only on the China server will be released in the coming updates. Still, more will have to be done if the game wants to remain popular and profitable. However, it would seem Tower of Fantasy is showing some signs of being a true rival to Genshin Impact. It has an interesting and unique cast of characters, and the added freedom of choice with weapons is also a bonus.
