After releasing a teaser trailer in late April, the marketing blitz for the miniseries Torchwood: Miracle Day is now in full swing. To make the most of it, Starz has released the impressive line-up of actors making guest appearances during the show’s early-summer 10-episode run.
Apparently, Torchwood fans are everywhere, but the vast majority seem to congregate in Hollywood – at least that’s what this line-up suggests.
Joining series regulars John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness), Eve Miles (Gwen Cooper) and Kai Owen (Rhys Williams) will be new stars specific to the Miracle Day storyline, such as Mekhi Phifer (Lie to Me, Dawn of the Dead), Bill Pullman (Independence Day) and Alexa Havins (CSI: NY, Grey’s Anatomy).
Even more exciting are the names taking smaller, but no less important roles on the show. Guest stars include Wayne Knight (Seinfeld, Jurassic Park), Ernie Hudson (The Crow, Ghostbusters), C. Thomas Howell (Criminal Minds, The Amazing Spider-Man), Mare Winningham (Brothers), Francis Fisher (The Lincoln Lawyer) with Nana Visitor and John de Lancie from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation, respectively.
But that’s not all. Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) and Arlene Tur (Eat Pray Love) will also appear in what Starz is describing as “extended guest roles.”
Well, that certainly is an impressive cast for what is essentially season 4 of the BBC original series. Though we now know who we can expect to see in Torchwood: Miracle Day, we still know little of what roles these actors will be playing – much less how they fit in to the overall storyline.
For the most part, all that we’ve had to go on are some well-done teasers that hauntingly use Lou Reed’s song ‘Perfect Day,’ over the image of a fuse burning away on a bomb resembling the earth. Though scant in details, the promos for Torchwood easily sum up the decidedly problematic side effects of a wish many of us share: never having to say good-bye to the people closest to you. While the trailers have been intriguingly free of solid details on the show – providing only a brief glimpse of Jack Harkness, but nothing in the way of the enormous cast listed above – you can bet a full-length trailer isn’t too far behind this most recent announcement.
According to the official release, here’s a more detailed synopsis of the miniseries:
“Torchwood: Miracle Day begins with a day when nobody dies. The result: a population boom, overnight. With all the extra people, resources are finite. It’s said that in four month’s time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can’t be a natural occurrence – someone’s got to be behind it. It’s a race against time as C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking ‘What is Torchwood?’ he’s drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human, forever.”
Conveniently slated to begin its run while Doctor Who season 6 is on mid-season hiatus (returning in September) Torchwood: Miracle Day will make a nice replacement for those unable to get enough of the Whoniverse until the good doctor returns.
Torchwood: Miracle Day premiers on Starz July 8.
