The original Top Gun was released in 1986 to massive acclaim and a tremendous cultural impact, but the idea of a sequel never came to fruition until now. Cruise said in the past that he wouldn't do a sequel until the story and timing were right, which finally came together with Top Gun: Maverick. Original director Tony Scott had expressed interest in a sequel many years ago, but his tragic death in 2012 stalled those efforts. Top Gun: Maverick is said to be an ode to Scott's original, paying homage to the cinematic style he created with the original.

While decades-late sequels to popular franchises can often fall flat, the care, precision, inspiration, and dedication from the cast and crew on Top Gun: Maverick looks to be on full display, making for something truly special. Frequently, sequels are made to capitalize and seize momentum, but Top Gun: Maverick is an entirely different kind of animal, as many moviegoers weren't even born when the original came out, so the pressure to deliver something all-encompassing is real. Given the trailers, featurettes, early screening reactions, and now character posters, it feels like Top Gun: Maverick is primed to be an absolute win for audiences and the box office when it takes flight on May 27th.
