As it continues to break box office records, Paramount Pictures has revealed the Top Gun: Maverick Blu-ray and digital release dates. The action drama acts as a sequel to the fan-favorite 1986 Tom Cruise film, having languished in development for decades as a variety of directors, writers and story treatments were developed for a follow-up. Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise on 2013's Oblivion, would land the directing gig for Top Gun: Maverick, with a script from frequent Cruise collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer.

Top Gun: Maverick picks up over 30 years after its predecessor and finds Cruise's titular character on the verge of a forced retirement as he remains a rebellious personality, though is given one more assignment in the form of training a group of young graduate pilots for a dangerous mission. Alongside Cruise, the ensemble cast for the film includes the return of Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Jay Ellis and Danny Ramirez. Top Gun: Maverick scores largely positive reviews from critics and has been a box office hit and now audiences will get the chance to revisit it again soon.

Though anticipation had been high for the sequel in the lead up to its release, Top Gun: Maverick became the surprise hit of both the summer and the year. Not only did the film garner widespread critical acclaim, netting a rare 96 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the second-best of Cruise's career behind Mission: Impossible — Fallout, it also became the highest-grossing film of his career, earning an impressive $1.378 billion against its $170 million production budget. In doing so, Top Gun: Maverick set a number of box office records, dethroning Titanic, multiple Marvel and Star Wars movies in its domestic box office numbers, as well as becoming the second film to cross the $1 billion mark amidst the pandemic, with its overall haul falling shy of Spider-Man: No Way Home's $1.901 billion gross.

While Top Gun: Maverick's Blu-ray release date may still be months away, the confirmation that the sequel will hit digital platforms later this month should come as exciting news for those who fell in love with the film, namely with its large selection of bonus features giving a look behind-the-scenes at the making of it. With the home media release dates now revealed, it will be interesting to see if a Paramount+ streaming date will be announced in the near future, with Paramount head Tom Ryan indicating in June that a date had yet to be set and a later report indicating that Cruise was the ultimate deciding factor for its release. Until audiences get confirmation of its streaming premiere, they can look forward to digitally purchasing Top Gun: Maverick on August 22, followed by its physical release on November 1.
